WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Wake Forest wide receiver/kick returner John Stone was named the ACC Specialist of the Week for his performance in Wake Forest's season opener versus Appalachian State Thursday night. Stone, a junior from Somers Point, N.J., took a kickoff return 88 yards into the endzone for the Deacs' first touchdown of the game. It was the second career kickoff return touchdown for Stone, a former ACC champion in the 100 and 200-meter runs.
The 88-yard return was the eighth-longest in Wake Forest history. Stone already holds the school record for longest kickoff return with a 99-yarder for a touchdown against Duke last season.
Stone finished the night against Appalachian State with two kickoff returns for 99 yards, averaging 49.5 yards per return. One week into the 2000 campaign, he tops the NCAA statistics in the kickoff return category.
