WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The Wake Forest men's and women's golf teams are both listed among the nation's top teams in their respective rankings, released today by the College Golf Foundation. In the Mastercard Collegiate Golf Rankings, the Deacon men are ranked 14th, while the women's team is also 14th, tied with Pepperdine.
The men's team, led by head coach Jerry Haas, lose just one senior and return all five starters from last year's squad, which placed 15th at the NCAA championships. The Deacs are the third highest-rated ACC school in the preseason rankings, with Clemson sitting atop the rankings and Georgia Tech at No. 3. Sophomore Brent Wanner leads the team after a strong rookie campaign in which he was named All-ACC and GCAA freshman All-America.
Under the direction of Dianne Dailey, the Wake Forest women's golf team finished second in the ACC and advanced to the NCAA championships, where junior Marta Prieto placed third individually. The women's team also returns a solid nucleus in 2000 after losing just two players off last year's squad to graduation. The Deacon women are the second highest-rated conference team behind Duke, ranked third nationally.
The Deacon women's golf squad opens up the 2000 fall season with the Stetson Fall Preview Tournament in Howey-in-the-Hils, FL September 15-17. The men's team begins play at The Ridges/Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate September 9-10 in Johnson City, TN.
