CHAPEL HILL, NC - Wake Forest suffered a 1-0 setback to undefeated, top-ranked and two-time defending national champion North Carolina in an ACC women's soccer matchup Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The loss ends a six-game winning streak for the Demon Deacons.
"We went into the game with the objective of playing with them and winning," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "We knew we could do that as long as we did not give up any goals off corner kicks - and we let that happen in the first two minutes of the game. In a 1-0 game, you just can't get over that."
North Carolina got on the board in the third minute of the match when the Tar Heels strung together three headers, in pinball fashion, following a corner kick. Maggie Tomecka headed in the goal. She was assisted by Leslie Gaston and Anne Remy. UNC held the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the match. Wake Forest managed four shots in the first half and one more in the second period.
The Tar Heels improve to 12-0 on the season and 4-0 in the ACC with the win and the Demon Deacons fall to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in league play with the loss. Wake Forest will return to action when it hosts No. 8 Clemson at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Spry Stadium.
