WINSTON-SALEM, NC - With just over two minutes remaining in regulation of a game seemed destined for overtime, junior forward Deliah Arrington scored the only goal of the game, giving No. 14 Clemson a 1-0 victory over Wake Forest on a cold and blustery Tuesday night in an exciting ACC women's soccer matchup at Spry Stadium. Despite controlling the ball a majority of the match and edging the Lady Tigers in shots 18-8, the Demon Deacons could not put away any of their chances.
"Clemson stole the game," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "The one great chance they had they put away - and we did not put away any of ours. We did everything right in that game except for our final decisions around the box. We took bad shots, didn't take them early enough, didn't send our crosses at the right time and did a horrible job on corner kicks. Those are little things, but they made a big difference. Overall I am happy with the way we played - it was a huge improvement from the UNC game Sunday, but I feel bad for the team."
Clemson goalkeeper Katie Carson collected six saves, but Wake's best chance was in the 14th minute of the game when Emily Taggart rang a shot off the Lady Tiger's crossbar.
Katherine Winstead started at center midfielder for the Demon Deacons in place of Sarah Kate Noftsinger, who is out with a knee injury suffered late in the North Carolina game on Oct. 14.
Clemson improves to 9-2 on the season and 3-2 in the ACC with the win and Wake Forest drops to 6-5-1 on the year and 2-2 in the ACC with the loss. The Demon Deacons will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host No. 19 Florida State, 7:30 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
