Wake Forest (10-3-1) drew first blood in the 26th minute on a spectacular goal from Christian Lonteen. His leaping volley from 10 yards out with assists to Aaron Thomas and James Riley gave the Deacons a 1-0 lead. Nine minutes later, Brian Carroll found Lonteen for his second of the evening and the Deacons led 2-0 after 45 minutes.
The Deacons got out of the gates quickly in the second half with a goal in the 49th minute. Lonteen was involved again as he fed Jeremiah White for his ACC-leading 11th goal of the season, marking the seventh straight game in which White has scored a goal.
Sophomore defender Kevin Wickart notched his first of the season in the 59th minute with a rocket from 30 yards off a rebound into the upper corner of the cage. Lonteen completed the hat trick as he combined with Carroll for the second time in the 70th minute.
With his three goals, Lonteen became the second Deacon to record a hat trick at Spry Stadium this season. White accomplished the feat on September 12 against Richmond. By adding an assist, Lonteen set a team season-high with seven points.
Goalkeepers William Hesmer and Brad McEachern shared the shutout although neither keep was required to make a save. The Demon Deacons outshot the Panthers 16-1 in the game. It was the team's fourth shutout in its last eight games.
The Demon Deacons get back into conference action at home on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against sixth-ranked North Carolina. It will be homecoming for the men's soccer program as dozens of former soccer players are expected to be in attendance.
