Wake Forest Visits UNC Greensboro As Part of Doubleheader
Wake Forest (4-3-1) takes on UNC Greensboro (3-3) on 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in a battle for Piedmont Triad supremacy following the match between the women's teams of the two schools. The injury-plagued Demon Deacons are coming off a 2-2 tie at Maryland on Sunday that saw Wake Forest play without four regular starters. The Spartans won both of their games last week, including a 2-0 victory at Wofford and a 9-1 beating of Georgia State at home.
White Hot
Sophomore Jeremiah White has been on a roll as of late, with nine points in his last three games. He recorded his first career hat trick on September 19 against Richmond and assisted on Christian Lonteen's goal at South Carolina. White found net again last Tuesday against Gardner-Webb, his fifth goal of the season. He has already surpassed his point totals from his rookie season. Last year in 16 games and 12 starts, White scored three goals and two assists.
Deacons-Spartans: The Series History
Wake Forest has claimed a pair of victories in the last two meetings, in 1999 and 2000, but UNC Greensboro still holds a 6-3-2 lead in the all-time series. In last year's game at Spry Stadium, the Deacons picked up a 2-1 win. Aaron Thomas deflected Brian Carroll's corner kick for the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute of play. Alejandro Moreno scored for the Spartans in a game. A capacity crowd of 3,088 saw the Deacons win their home opener.
White Leads ACC in Goals, Hesmer Ranks High In Goalkeeping
Sophomore Jeremiah White's recent goal outburst has propelled him to the top of the ACC rankings for points and goals scored. Through October 1, White has five goals, averaging 0.71 per contest to lead the ACC. In the points category, White is tied for the league lead at 1.57.
In the goalkeeper department, William Hesmer should be getting some early consideration for All-ACC, based on his statistics. He is allowing just under one goal per game, has a save percentage of .822, good for second in the ACC and leads the conference with 37 saves in all eight games.
Tightening The Screws On Defense
The Wake Forest defense is off to a solid start, having allowed just eight goals in seven games. That number is much improved as the Deacons allowed 13 goals in their first seven contests last year. Part of the solution has been the relocation of junior team captain Aaron Thomas and sophomore Kevin Wickart to the back line. In goal, Hesmer has stopped better than 82 percent of shots in his direction.
Record Watch: Christian Lonteen
Senior Christian Lonteen continues to move up the career lists in goals and assists. With his first goal of the season at South Carolina, Lonteen needs just five goals to crack the top 10. He is already sixth all-time in assists with 17, needing two for fifth place.
