GREENSBORO, NC - Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz earned his 100th career victory with a 5-0 shutout win Wednesday evening at UNC Greensboro. Da Luz, who has 54 of those in his fifth season at Wake Forest and 10th year overall, saw his Demon Deacons post their third consecutive shutout win.
"In the first half we started a little lackadaisical," said da Luz. "We talked to them at halftime about playing with more passion. We really wanted to play more aggressive in the first 15 minutes and they responded by playing much more cohesively and we got a lot of goals from a lot of different people."
Sophomore defender A.B. Robbins scored a pair of goals to lead the Demon Deacons to victory. Emily Taggart flicked on a free kick taken by Alli Hunt to A.B. Robbins, who buried the game-winning goal into the bottom left corner of the goal in the 24th minute. Robbins, a Richmond, VA native, kicked in her second goal of the game and team-leading third on the season in the 54th minute when she followed up a rebounded shot taken by Joline Charlton.
Katie Johnson sent a rocket in to the upper right corner of the Spartans' goal to give the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead for the half. Wake Forest freshman midfielder Kathleen Andrews earned the assist. Stacy Roeck started off a second half scoring spree resulting in three Wake Forest goals in a matter of five minutes when she connected with a pass from Sarah Kate Noftsinger. Robbins scored her second goal and then Emily Taggart capped off the scoring when she followed up her own shot that bounced off UNC Greensboro goalkeeper, Kathryn Clewley, giving Taggart her first goal of the season.
Clewley finished the game with 15 saves for the Spartans. Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan shared the shutout with redshirt freshman Kenna Healy, who saw her first collegiate action. UNCG drops to 6-4 with the loss and Wake Forest improves to 3-3-1 with the win. The Demon Deacons will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they host BYU at 1:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
