WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Philip Rivers completed 20 of 32 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown as N.C. State beat Wake Forest 17-14 on Saturday night.
Rivers' 1-yard scoriing run with 6:02 left in the third quarter finished the Wolfpack's rally from a 14-3 deficit late in the first half. Ray Robinson added 90 yards on 31 carries as N.C. State improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.
Wake Forest (2-3, 0-3) turned the ball over twice and managed only 108 yards of total offense in the second half, failing to take advantage of good field position. Tarence Williams led the Deacons with 113 yards rushing on 25.
Wake Forest, which had been rotating quarterbacks, went with Anthony Young for all but the last two possessions. He was 4-of-12 for 45 yards and gained 12 yards on seven rushes.
N.C. State took a 17-14 lead with 6:02 left in the third quarter when Rivers sneaked in from the 1. Robinson ran six times for 41 yards on the 86-yard drive, and Rivers hit Jerricho Cotchery on a 24-yard completion on a third-and-6 from the Wake 48.
Three times in the second half, the Deacons failed to take advantage of good field position. One possession started at the 50, but ended with a Fabian Davis fumble at the N.C. State 20. Another began at the Wolfpack 48, but Wake went three plays and out. A third started at the N.C. State 43 but ended when Brian Williams intercepted Young on third-and-6 from the 13.
On Wake's first possession of the game, Tarence Williams scored from 2 yards out to cap an 80-yard drive. Williams had 34 yards on seven carries during the 4:21 drive, and Young hit Ray Thomas for a 20-yard completion. The Deacons converted four third-down plays during the drive.
The Wolfpack answered with a 23-yard field goal from Adam Kiker with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter. Rivers completed four passes for 29 yards on the drive, including a 15-yarder to Wright. He completed a pass to Cotra Jackson on third-and-6 from the Wake 7, but Eric King stopped Jackson short of the first down.
Wake went ahead 14-3 at the 3:35 mark of the half when Fred Staton used second effort to score from 2 yards out to cap a 71-yard drive. The drive was keyed by a trick play, with wideout Fabian Davis throwing off an end-around for a 38-yard gain to Jax Landfried.
N.C. State beat the clock to close to 14-10 at the half. Rivers hit Joseph Gray from 1-yard out to cap an 80-yard drive with 24 seconds left.
Wake ran for 125 yards in the first half, led by Williams with 74 on 15 carries and Stone with 26 on five carries.
Rivers finished the half 12-of-19 for 96 yards, and Robinson ran 13 times for 44 yards.
