DAVIDSON, NC - Emily Taggart scored three goals and assisted another to lead Wake Forest to a 6-0 shutout victory over Davidson Wednesday night in a women's soccer matchup on Steve Smith Field at Richardson Stadium.
"I was worried about this game from an attitude standpoint," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "They did a great though. They really pressured well and just did everything correct away from the ball. There was no letdown at all and our subs kept it going. Going up 2-0 at the half and ending up with six is great."
The Demon Deacons got on the board in the 17th minute of the game when Emily Taggart bounced a shot off the right post and Joline Charlton kicked in the rebound. The goal was the first on the season for Charlton, a junior forward from Stone Mountain, GA.
With a minute and a half left in the half Stacy Roeck threaded a ball through the Wildcat defense to Taggart, who slid a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give Wake Forest a 2-0 lead for the half.
Taggart was just getting started as she headed in a corner kick taken by Alena Thom in the 60th minute and then four minutes later took a pass up the middle from Sarah Kate Noftsinger and buried it in the lower left corner of the goal, giving the senior forward from Pleasanton, CA a hat trick - her first of the season and third in her Wake Forest career.
Wake Forest freshman midfielder Sara Creighton booted a shot from the top of the box that hit the crossbar and bounced down on the line, which the linesman ruled a goal. It was Crieghton's first collegiate goal. Katherine Winstead added a sixth and final goal when she banged in a shot in the 77th minute. She was assisted by Courtney McCrudden.
Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Hobart had 11 saves on the day. Wake Forest starting goalkeeper Erin Regan shared the shutout with Kenna Healy.
Wake Forest improves to 5-3-1 on the season with the win and Davidson falls to 5-8-0 on the year with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action on Friday, when they host Tulane at 7:30 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
