WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's soccer team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament Monday afternoon, making six consecutive years that the Demon Deacons have played in the NCAA Tournament. Wake Forest will play William & Mary 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16 at the University of Virginia's Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, VA. The winner will meet whichever team wins the 5:00 p.m. Virginia - Liberty match in the second round, also in Charlottesville, on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1:00 p.m.
The Demon Deacons, 9-8-2 on the season, are coming off a 3-0 loss at home to top-ranked North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Championship Nov. 9. Friday's match will be the first-ever meeting between William & Mary and Wake Forest in women's soccer. Wake Forest suffered a 2-0 setback at Klockner Stadium Nov. 2 against then-ranked No. 15 Virginia.
Seven of the eight teams in the ACC made the newly-expanded field of 64 teams (NC State wasn't selected and Georgia Tech does not have a women's soccer team). The ACC's seven teams is second only to the Big East Conference's eight teams in the tournament.
Wake Forest has played 13 teams in the NCAA Tournament field and holds a 5-8-2 record against those teams. The Demon Deacons have a 3-4-1 record in the NCAA Tournament and the furthest they have ever advanced in the dance is the third round, when the 1999 Wake Forest squad got a first round bye, a 1-0 second round win over Michigan and then tied Clemson 0-0 in the regionals, losing the penalty kick shootout to determine which team advanced to the quarterfinals.
