Clemson, SC - Virginia's Kyle Martino scored early in the first overtime period in leading top-seeded Virginia to a 1-0 overtime victory over fourth-seeded Wake Forest in the first semifinal match of the 15th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship at Clemson, S.C., Friday night. Martino's goal broke a scoreless tie in what had previously been an evenly-played game.
The Cavaliers remain unbeaten with a 17-0-1 record this season. Wake Forest, ranked ninth by Soccer America, fall to 13-5-2 this season.
Martino's gamewinning goal resulted from a play that began innocently. A Wake Forest defender passed the ball back to goalkeeper William Hesmer who slipped on the wet Riggs Field surface. Martino was first to arrive on the scene and controlled the loose ball. He took his time and sent a shot into an open goal at the 91:26 mark to allow the Cavaliers to play for the ACC Championship on Sunday against Clemson.
The Demon Deacons are expecting to receive an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament which begins Friday November 23. The pairings for the 48-team field will be released live on Fox Sports South at 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
