WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The sixth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team shutout Charleston Southern on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium by a final score of 6-0. Senior Christian Lonteen and freshman Stephen Keel tallied two goals each to help the Demon Deacons extend their winning streak to nine games.
Wake Forest (13-3-1) controlled the game from the opening whistle, maintaining possession for nearly all 90 minutes and outshooting the Buccaneers 25-7.
The Deacons jumped out on top in the 18th minute on Keel's first of the night. After taking a pass from Jeremiah White, Robbie Fischer sent a ball into the goal mouth where Keel tapped it in. Later in the first half, Fischer was dragged down in the penalty area and Christian Lonteen converted on a penalty kick. Halftime arrived with the Deacons leading by two goals.
Wake Forest poured it on in the second stanza with four goals. Less than three minutes into the second half, Jeremiah White extended his personal goal streak to nine games with assists to Lonteen and Brian Carroll. It was the All-America candidate's ACC-leading 15th goal of the campaign.
Freshman Scott Sealy got into the act in the 53rd minute. Later, Lonteen and Keel put the finishing touches on the victory, each scoring their second goals of the game.
In goal, starting keeper William Hesmer made one save in the first 55 minutes before yielding to Brad McEachern who came on to make a pair of stops. They combined to earn the shutout, the team's seventh of the season.
The Demon Deacons will hit the road for the first time in more than a month to face Clemson on Saturday. A win or a tie would clinch a second place regular season finish for Wake Forest, the highest team finish since 1989. The Deacons will be seeking their 10th straight victory which would equal a school record, also set in 1989.
