WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team opens its 2001-02 season with an exhibition contest against Remus Powerbasket of Wels, Austria on Friday night at Reynolds Gymnasium.
The game, which will tip off at 7:00 p.m., is free to the public.
Wake Forest head coach Charlene Curtis begins her fifth season at the helm of the Demon Deacon program, and enters the 2001-02 campaign with three starters and 11 letterwinners returning from last year's team which posted the highest number of victories in four seasons.
Returning starters include 6-1 sophomore forward Eafton Hill (Boone, N.C.), who led Wake Forest in scoring as a rookie last season (11.4 ppg) and was named to the ACC All-Freshman team. A pair of seniors, including 6-4 center LaChina Robinson (Alexandria, Va.) and 5-4 point guard Val Klopfer (Albany, N.Y.) also return as the most experienced players in the Deacon lineup.
Friday's contest marks the sixth game in seven days for Remus Powerbasket, as the Austrian team is embarking on a challenging 12-day, 10-game U.S. tour. The squad has dropped games at UT-Chattanooga, Tennessee, Connecticut and Old Dominion and will play at East Carolina tonight.
Wake Forest plays just one exhibition game this season. The regular season begins Monday, Nov. 19, as the Deacons host Appalachian State. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Joel Coliseum.
