For first-year Wake Forest football coach Jim Grobe, Saturday's Spring Game at Groves Stadium serves at least two purposes.
"It will give our fans an opportunity to see most of the players who will be lining up this fall," Grobe said, "and it gives our staff another day of evaluation."
The Spring Game kicks off at 1 p.m. Admission is free, although fans can purchase a lunch ticket for $5. Lunch is served beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Grobe made the decision today not to divide the team into two different squads simply because the Deacons are short on numbers at a few positions. Instead, the offense will go against the defense and no score will be recorded.
"We are pleased with where we are at this point," Grobe said. "We would very much like to play a full-scale game on Saturday and let the kids have some fun, but minor injuries to a number of players have forced us to make the game more of a controlled scrimmage."
Deacons suffering from minor injuries and listed as doubtful for Saturday's game include three wide receivers -- Ira Williams (broken bone in hand), Fabian Davis (high ankle sprain) and Jax Landfried (shoulder). Offensive lineman and long snapper Chad Rebar (shoulder), defensive back Ricky Perez (hip) and linebacker Matt Myers (shoulder) are also doubtful. Offensive linemen Tim Bennett, Blake Henry and Marcus Kisner, and linebacker Jamaal Argrow are all recovering from injuries suffered early or prior to the start of spring practice.
Grobe hopes the Deacons accomplish much on Saturday and that they do it in a short amount of time. In a recent informal scrimmage, Wake ran 79 plays in just over 50 minutes. On Saturday, the breaks will be short, there will be no media timeouts and an abbreviated halftime.
"I don't expect the game to last much more than one hour," Grobe said. "We'll get a lot done in a short amount of time."
