WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest football team conducted its annual spring game under first-year head coach Jim Grobe. The offensive scored five touchdowns, led by rising sophomore quarterback Anthony Young, who had a pair of touchdown scampers in the red zone, and rising junior James MacPherson who was 9-for-17 passing for 154 yards with a touchdown.
MacPherson completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jason Anderson for the first score of the game. Young was just 4-for-11 for 38 yards and an interception but rushed seven times for 51 yards and two scores.
The controlled scrimmage was conducted in a offense vs. defense format, therefore no official score was kept. Of the scrimmage's 82 plays, 27 went for first downs as the offense finished with a total of 493 yards of offense.
Tarence Williams was the game's leading rusher, amassing 89 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. John Stone was used as a running back and a receiver. He made three catches for 34 yards and picked up 84 yards on just six carries, including a 37-yard rush on the first play of the game.
Fred Staton scored on a 12-yard touchdown run and finished the day with 38 yards on nine carries. Jax Landfried hauled in two catches for 60 yards while Patrick Mariani caught a game-high five passes for 46 yards.
On the defensive side of the ledger, Obi Chukwumah led all players with eight tackles. Defensive back Adrian Duncan posted seven tackles, including two for loss. Defensive backs Chris Justice and Daryl Shaw both recorded interceptions.
The 100th season of Wake Forest football will open on September 1 in Greenville, N.C., for the renewal of the East Carolina series. The home opener is September 8 against Appalachian State at Groves Stadium.
