WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ed Kargbookorogie, (pronounced KARG-bo-oh-KOR-gee) a senior linebacker for the Wake Forest football team, has been selected by the NCAA to participate in the fifth annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. Kargbookorogie, a history major from Stafford, TX, is one of 300 student-athletes identified as current or future leaders on their campuses and in their communities that will participate in the conference. The conference will be held May 28 through June 1 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and the Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
The 2001 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will feature challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable the student-athletes to become change agents at their colleges and universities and in their cities. The student-athletes will participate in daily group discussions about critical issues and join in team-building exercises and leadership development games during the five-day conference. As a result of participation, the student-athletes will enhance their decision-making and problem-solving skills, critical-thinking skills, collaborative skills, and improve planning and priority management. The leadership conference also promotes better communication and understanding among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.
The NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference is one of the largest non-competitive gatherings of student-athletes representing NCAA Division I, II and III. The student-athletes were selected from a total of 1,084 nominations that were submitted by member institutions that participate in the NCAA's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. A total of 22 intercollegiate sports will be represented at the leadership conference. Criteria for selection to the leadership conference include the student-athletes' demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and potential to benefit significantly from a leadership-development experience.
Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Women's Sports Foundation, and Billy Mills, a gold medalist in the 10,000-Meter Run at the 1964 Olympic Games, will speak about leadership, diversity and unity in sports when they address the 2001 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference.
