Greensboro, N.C. - Wake Forest senior golfer Marta Prieto (Sevilla, Spain) was named to the 2001 All-Atlantic Coast Conference women's golf team, as announced by the league office today. Prieto is the only Deacon represented on the eight-member squad, as conference champion Duke has five players on the team and Florida State is represented by two golfers.
Prieto leads the Deacon women this season with a 74.8 stroke average, seven top 20 finishes (including four top-10s), a low round of 68, and four rounds under par. She tied with teammate Maria Beautell to finish first individually in the season's opening event, the Stetson Fall Preview. She also finished fourth at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro and third at this year's ACC championships. Prieto is the highest-rated Deacon in the national rankings, currently checking in at No. 21.
Prieto, who also earned all-conference honors in 1998 and 1999, becomes just the ninth player in league history to be named to three All-ACC teams. She is just the fourth Wake Forest player to accomplish this feat, following former Deacs Stephanie Neill, Alexandra Armas and Laura Philo. Prieto was also the 1998 ACC Rookie of the Year after capturing the individual ACC Championship as a freshman.
Prieto and the 16th-ranked WFU women's golf team heads to Chapel Hill, N.C. this weekend to compete in the NCAA East Regional. Twenty-one teams will compete at the Finley Golf Course, with the top eight teams after 54 holes advancing to the NCAA Championships at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
