Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest football team kicked off the 2001 campaign with its first full-squad preseason practices on Saturday. The Deacons began the day with running tests before suiting up for a morning session from 10:30 to noon. A scheduled two-hour afternoon practice was cut a little short due to a thunderstorm.
"I was pleased with this morning's session. I think our kids are in pretty good shape," said Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe. "They seemed to have a lot of fun being back. A lot of times guys drag a little in the beginning practices, but we had a good day today. We got rained out a little bit the last part of practice this afternoon, but overall I'm very pleased with the first day."
"We had some flashes of brilliance here and there, but it was pretty sloppy. You expect that for a first day. You learn, after being in coaching for a little while, not to expect too much on the first day. Certainly when we come back on Monday we'll expect not to make as many mistakes and hopefully each day improve a little bit."
The Deacons return to the practice field at 9:15 Monday morning for a two-hour session, followed by an afternoon practice from 3:30 to 5:30. (This will be the regular two-a-day schedule.) Two-a-day practices continue for the next two weeks. The team will dress out in full pads for the first time on Wednesday, August 15.
Wake Forest's season opener is Saturday, Sept. 1 at East Carolina in Greenville, NC. The home opener is versus Appalachian State on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Groves Stadium.
