The pads were popping for the first time as head coach Jim Grobe and the Wake Forest coaching staff unleashed their players in a 20-minute, full-contact scrimmage to wrap up the Wednesday afternoon session. It was the first such practice of the fall camp.
In the scrimmage, the first and second teams on both sides of the ball saw action. Grobe said he would like to see the team continue to eliminate mistakes but called the first day of contact a success.
"We worked the kids hard. We're probably working on conditioning more than anything else right now," Grobe said. "We did a little bit of scrimmaging at the end of practice but our guys were really tired. We were sloppy and didn't look very good. I was a little disappointed with some of the silly mistakes that we made but overall, I'm pleased with the effort."
Much of the morning session was spent in position drills with the offense and defense working independently. Mother Nature cooperated for the second straight day as the Demon Deacons worked in pleasant conditions with the mercury rising into the mid-80's by late afternoon.
Two-a-day practices continue on Thursday. The Grobe Era officially gets underway on September 1 as the Deacons travel to Greenville to line up against in-state rival East Carolina.
