WINSTON-SALEM -- Midway through two-a-day practices and 15 days away from the season opener, Wake Forest football coach Jim Grobe is happy, but not content, with the way his Deacons are performing.
"We had a good practice this morning," Grobe said. "We had some scrimmage time at the end and I thought the guys flew around the football pretty good. The afternoon practice wasn't as good, it was a little sluggish."
Wake Forest, which opens the 2001 campaign Sept. 1 at East Carolina, will have a closed scrimmage Saturday. The Deacons will take Sunday off before resuming the final week of two-a-day practices on Monday.
"I don't think you'll find too many coaches who are happy with two weeks of practice remaining," Grobe said. "But that doesn't concern me. I'll be more concerned how we look one week from Saturday when we scrimmage for the last time before the ECU game.
"These are the 'dog days' we're going through. We're making plenty of mistakes but we just have to keep pressing through them."
The Deacons, 2-9 a year ago, return 20 starters off of last year's team (including the kicking specialists).
