SPRY STADIUM - The Wake Forest men's soccer team began its exhibition schedule with a 3-0 shutout of Greensboro College on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.
The Deacons got on the board in the 39th minute when Jamal Seale found Bobby Gehring in the penalty area. Gehring's shot slid past Greensboro College goalkeeper Jeff Jones and the Deacons took a one goal lead in a first half that saw 24 fouls.
In the second half, senior Christian Lonteen and sophomore Vicente Bastidas added goals for the final margin of victory. Lonteen's came on a free kick in the 62nd minute while Bastidas weaved his way through heavy traffic, including the keeper, to find the back of the net in the 82nd minute.
Brad McEachern and William Hesmer each made one save and combined for the shutout.
The Deacons will have one final preseason tuneup before opening the regular season. That game will be on Saturday August 25 against William & Mary as part of the Soccer Saturday doubleheader at Spry Stadium. The Wake Forest women's team will play AFC Lightning at 5:00 p.m. The men will take the field following the first game.
