WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest football team held a scrimmage Saturday morning at Groves Stadium. New head coach Jim Grobe had a chance to take a look at the Demon Deacons putting into play what they've been working on all week in practice.
"We had a good morning scrimmage," said Grobe. "I thought Friday afternoon was sluggish for us and the kids came back today, rebounded well and we got good work. We got as much as we wanted to see out of our first group and had a great session with our backup kids. A lot of our 2s are still competitive to be 1s. Our freshman group and then some of the guys that have hovering around third team got a chance to show what they could do today. It will be great film for us to look at over the weekend and try to make some decisions so that Monday we can be focused a little more on who our 1s and 2s are."
The Deacs looked sharp on both offense and defense as the first teams went against each other early in the scrimmage. The offense broke loose a few times as the second teams arrived, but the defense began to shore things up towards the end of the scrimmage.
"I was pleased with our older kids on the first unit on defense with their ability to make checks, get lined up and do what they're coached to do," Grobe said. "The younger guys are still trying to grasp the calls and the situations - understand when they're in third and long and all those sort of things. So they were a little sloppier, but the thing that was impressive was as the scrimmage progressed, the younger guys were making fewer and fewer mistakes and starting to feel a little more comfortable playing. Overall I was pleased with our veteran guys and as the scrimmage went along the younger guys too. We did some good things on both sides of the ball."
Wake Forest will be back at it again Monday for two sessions of practice as the Demon Deacons prepare for their season opener, Sept. 1 at East Carolina.
