SPRY STADIUM - Despite an overwhelming 26-8 advantage in shots, the Wake Forest men's soccer team dropped its final exhibition game 2-1 to 25th-ranked William & Mary on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.
The Deacons had countless opportunities to score throughout the game, especially in the second half when Wake outshot the Tribe 18-4. But William & Mary goalkeeper Trevor Upton was up to the task, making six saves in the second stanza. Upton also got a little help the crossbar on a couple occasions and from Tribe defenders who combined for three back saves.
The Deacons were able to find the back of the net just one time on senior Christian Lonteen's penalty kick in the 77th minute. The goal wasn't enough for Wake Forest who trailed by a two goal margin at the time. The Tribe's Graham Albert came off the bench in the first half and netted a pair of goals against Deacon goalkeeper Brad McEachern. William Hesmer took over in the second half and did not allow a goal and made three saves.
On the whole, the Wake Forest defense was sound, allowing just eight shots and coaxing the Tribe into eight offside calls.
The game was the final preseason tuneup for the Deacons who open their season on Friday, August 31 against James Madison at 2:30 p.m. Wake Forest will also face George Mason during the weekend at the four-team GMU Soccer Classic in Fairfax, Va.
