Deacons To Open Season On the Road

Aug. 29, 2001
The Demon Deacons begin their season on Friday, August 31 against James Madison at 2:30 p.m. as part of the GMU/ Kappa Soccer Classic, hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Va. The Deacons will play the host team, the Patriots, on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
A win this weekend would make head coach Jay Vidovich Wake Forest's winningest coach in school history. Vidovich would pass his friend and mentor Walt Chyzowych, who is widely considered to be the father of American soccer. Vidovich is 77-49-10 and enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Demon Deacons.
Meet The Deacs
Last season, a very young Wake Forest team ended the season with a 10-7-2 record and a fifth-place finish in the ACC. The 2001 Deacons will also be young, with just two seniors on the roster, but will not be lacking experience as nine starters come back for 2001.
The Deacons look to be particularly strong in the midfield where junior team captain Aaron Thomas and sophomore Brian Carroll anchor the middle. Thomas was a second team All-ACC selection in 2000 and Carroll is fresh off a stint with the U.S. U-20 National Team.
