Wake Forest Hits The Road for ACC Opener
Wake Forest (2-1) will raise the curtain on the 2001 ACC season on Monday night in Charlottesville, Va., against long-time nemesis and second-ranked Virginia. The Deacons will be looking for their second win over a ranked opponent from the Commonwealth of Virginia this season having already notched a victory over #16 James Madison on Aug. 31.
Demon Deacons Will Have To Shake The Rust Off
Due to the tragic events in New York City and Washington, D.C., many sporting events nationwide were postponed or cancelled altogether. Wake Forest men's soccer was no exception as the Charleston Southern and Virginia games, originally scheduled for Sept. 11 and Sept. 15, were postponed. That means the Deacons will be playing their first game in nine days when they take the field against the Cavaliers.
1981, 1991 . . . 2001?
Historically, the Deacons have struggled against the 'Hoos as Wake has posted just two wins in the 27 meetings since 1980. However, both of those wins came in Charlottesville and those wins came in 1981 and 1991. While not a trend the Deacons would hope to maintain in the long run, the team hopes the "10-year pattern" stays the same on Monday.
Being Jay Vidovich
Head coach Jay Vidovich became Wake's winningest coach in history with the 2-0 victory over James Madison. Vidovich passed his friend and mentor Walt Chyzowych, widely considered to be the father of American soccer. Vidovich is 79-50-10 in his eighth season.
Commonwealth Connections
Three Demon Deacons are returning to play in their home state on Monday in Charlottesville -- sophomores Brian Carroll (Springfield) and Kelvin Jones (Fredricksburg) and freshman Donny Smith (Roanoke). Carroll wore the Red, White and Blue for the U.S. U-20 National Team last spring with Virginia's Kenny Arena, Aleko Eskandarian and Kyle Martino.
Hesmer Named Co-ACC Player of the Week
Sophomore goalkeeper William Hesmer and Maryland defender Philip Salyer shared last week's ACC Men's Soccer Player of the Week honor. Hesmer allowed one goal in 180 minutes of play to lead Wake Forest to wins over No. 16 James Madison and George Mason. The Wilson, N.C., native recorded his first career shutout against No. 16 JMU tallying six saves. The only goal allowed by Hesmer over the weekend came on a second half GMU penalty kick. Hesmer was also named to the GMU Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team.
Notes From The Accounting Department
GK William Hesmer leads the ACC in goals against average, yielding just two goals in 270 minutes of action (0.67 GAA) ... one of those goals was a penalty kick at George Mason ... not coincedentally, the Deacons have the best scoring defense in league, giving up 0.67 goals per game ... Christian Lonteen has cracked the school's all-time assist chart and resides in 7th place with 15 assists.
