Charlottesville, Va. - The 24th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 game to second-ranked Virginia on Monday night in Charlottesville in the ACC opener for both teams. Cavalier sophomore Alecko Eskandarian scored the contest's only goal at the 34:25 mark to give the Virginia the victory.
Eskandarian's goal resulted in a play that was started by the Cavaliers' Jonathan Cole. Cole gained possession of the ball for UVa near midfield and sent a pass to teammate Kyle Martino who was out on the left flank. Martino gathered Cole's pass and sent a cross into the box where Eskandarian slid through the Wake Forest defense and chipped in a shot from 13 yards. Eskandarian's goal, his fifth of the season, would prove to be the game-winner as the Cavaliers' defense held the Demon Deacons scoreless for the second straight game.
Demon Deacon goalkeeper William Hesmer was sharp in goal, collecting a game-high eight saves. But it wasn't enough as Wake Forest falls to 2-2 on the season, 0-1 in the ACC. Virginia remains unbeaten at 4-0-1 and 1-0 in the league.
Wake Forest had some good chances early and late and held possession for most of the game but couldn't put the ball past Cavalier goalkeeper David Comfort who scooped up two saves.
The Demon Deacons will return to action on Wednesday, September 19th when they host the Richmond Spiders at 7:00 p.m. That game will be played at Spry Stadium.
