SPRY STADIUM - The Wake Forest men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 victory over the University of Richmond on Wednesday night on the right foot of sophomore forward Jeremiah White who netted three goals for his first career hat trick.
The Demon Deacons (3-2) were outshot 20-14 in the game and directed just three shots on goal. All three came from White and all three went into the net. The first came in the 32nd minute when Kevin Wickart's long ball through the middle bounced high over the heads of White and a Spider defender. White outran the defense and headed it over the top of Richmond keeper Shawn Alexander.
After the intermission, White picked up where he left off adding another goal from Brian Carroll in the 57th minute which proved to be the gamewinner. He put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute with his third goal of the night from Christian Lonteen. White's three goal night was the first hat trick by a Demon Deacon since 1998 when Greg Krauss accomplished the feat against UNC Asheville.
The Spiders responded less than a minute later with a goal from Matt Greene but it was too little too late as the Deacons cruised to the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper William Hesmer made some acrobatic stops in the second half on his way to a season-high 11 saves.
Wake Forest improves to 3-2 while the Spiders fall to 3-2-1 on the season. The Demon Deacons will hit the road for a Sunday matinee at non-conference rival South Carolina. Game time in Columbia is slated for 2:00 p.m.
