Fairfax, Va. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 victory over George Mason University on Sunday afternoon to claim the tournament title at the GMU Soccer Classic. The win improves the Deacons' record to 2-0 overall.
Wake Forest and George Mason played a scoreless first half before senior Jamal Seale cracked the seal in the 49th minute. Following a Christian Lonteen corner kick, Aaron Thomas flicked the ball to Seale who blasted a left-footer from 20 yards out for a one-goal lead.
Twenty-three minutes later, Seale contributed to another score, earning an assist on freshman Scott Sealy's first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute. Sealy caught the George Mason defense on its heels and followed his own shot to give Wake Forest a two-goal cushion.
The Patriots cut into the Wake Forest lead in the 76th minute when sophomore goalkeeper William Hesmer was called for a foul inside his own box. GMU's Rob Klug converted the penalty, making it a 2-1 game.
Wake Forest got the insurance goal less than five minutes later when Kevin Wickart sent a 60-yard ball across the field to freshman James Riley who put a volley behind GMU keeper John O'Hara to round out the scoring.
The Deacons and SMU both finished the weekend with a pair of wins but Wake Forest earned the tournament title by virtue of a plus-four goal differential. Four Deacs made the all-tournament team including Seale and a trio of sophomores, Wickart, Hesmer and Brian Carroll.
The undefeated Deacons will make their Spry Stadium debut this weekend as they host the Big Green of Dartmouth at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
