COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Wake Forest women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 shutout victory over Maryland. Senior midfielder Sarah Kate Noftsinger scored the game-winning goal for the Demon Deacons, giving Wake Forest a 1-0 start in the conference schedule.
Noftsinger, who hails from Richmond, VA, beat her former high school teammate, Maryland goalkeeper Ali Wolff for the game's only goal in the 76th minute. Noftsinger collected a rebound of her own shot and beat her fellow Godwin High graduate for the goal at 75:36. Wake Forest freshman midfielder April Raymer was credited with an assist for putting the ball into the box where Noftsinger was able to get off her consecutive shots.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Regan earned her second shutout for the season and had eight saves on the day. Wolff had six stops for the Terps, including a penalty kick taken by Wake Forest's Stacy Roeck just 5:36 into the match.
Maryland drops to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC while Wake Forest improves to 1-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons will return to action Friday, Sept. 28 when they host NC State at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
