Wake Forest Travels To Maryland Wake Forest (4-3) visits Maryland on Sunday afternoon, seeking their first ACC win of the season. The Demon Deacons are fresh off a 2-0 win over Gardner-Webb at home on Tuesday. The Terrapins (3-3) have lost their last two contests and are looking for their first goal since September 9. The Deacons have won the last two meetings with Maryland, both of which have gone to overtime before Wake Forest claimed victory.
White Hot
Sophomore Jeremiah White has been on a roll as of late, with nine points in his last three games. He recorded his first career hat trick on September 19 against Richmond and assisted on Christian Lonteen's goal at South Carolina. White found net again on Tuesday against Gardner-Webb, his fifth goal of the season. He has already surpassed his point totals from his rookie season. Last year in 16 games and 12 starts, White scored three goals and two assists.
Deacons-Terrapins: The Series History
Of Wake Forest's Atlantic Coast Conference rivalries, no series has been more evenly-played than Maryland. The Terrapins hold a slim 11-10-2 margin after the Demon Deacons claimed overtime victories in both 1999 and 2000. In fact, eight contests since 1983 have required extra time.
In 1999 in College Park, Jamal Seale's goal in the 100th minute was the difference in a 2-1 win. Last year, Ben Stafford capped a 4-3 comeback victory in the 99th minute.
Among the League Leaders
Sophomore Jeremiah White's recent goal outburst has propelled him near the top of the ACC rankings for points and goals scored. Through September 23, White scored four goals and was one goal off the pace set by UVa's Alecko Eskandarian. In the points category, White was one point behind the leaders.
In the goalkeeper department, William Hesmer should be getting some early consideration for All-ACC, based on his statistics. He is allowing just one goal per game, has a save percentage of .829, good for second in the ACC and is tied for the conference lead with 29 saves.
Tightening The Screws On Defense
The Wake Forest defense is off to a solid start, having allowed just six goals in six games. That number is much improved as the Deacons allowed 11 goals in their first six games last year. Part of the solution has been the relocation of junior team captain Aaron Thomas and sophomore Kevin Wickart to the back line. In goal, Hesmer has stopped nearly 83 percent of shots in his direction.
Record Watch: Christian Lonteen
Senior Christian Lonteen continues to move up the career lists in goals and assists. With his first goal of the season at South Carolina last week, Lonteen needs just five goals to crack the top 10. He is already tied for sixth all-time in assists with 16, three short of catching former teammate Ben Stafford.
