WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's soccer team picked up its second straight shutout victory over an ACC opponent Friday night at Spry Stadium with a 1-0 win against North Carolina State. Stacy Roeck, a senior defender from Solana Beach, CA, scored the game-winning goal for the Demon Deacons in the 79th minute of the game.
"We made it a little difficult on ourselves," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "I thought we had some good possession sequences, but we just need to concentrate on finishing."
While Wake Forest controlled the ball for a majority of the game, the Wolfpack played the Demon Deacons almost even in every category. Both goalkeepers collected five saves and intercepted several crosses from the opposing offense.
After 78 minutes of scoreless soccer, NC State goalkeeper Gretchen Lear knocked down a shot from Wake Forest senior forward Emily Taggart. Alli Hunt, a freshman midfielder for the Demon Deacons tapped the rebound out wide to Stacy Roeck, who fired it into the lower left corner of the net for the game-winner. The goal was Roeck's first of the season.
NC State falls to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the ACC with the loss and Wake Forest improves to 2-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Greensboro, NC, to take on UNC-Greensboro at 5:00 p.m.
