College Park, Md. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team rallied to tie conference rival Maryland 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
The Demon Deacons (4-3-1) played without the services of four injured starters. Sophomores Wiggy Saunders and Vicente Bastidas made their first and second starts of the season, respectively.
Wake Forest, who outshot Maryland 6-5 in the second half, tied the game with just 3:17 remaining in regulation on Bobby Gehring's second of the season. Gehring headed Christian Lonteen's corner kick into the top corner of the goal from eight yards out to even the score at two.
Ten minutes earlier, Scott Sealy got the Deacons on the board following a scramble in the box. Aaron Thomas collected the loose ball and passed to Kelvin Jones who headed a pass to a wide-open Sealy. He buried it for his second of the season.
"It was a gutsy performance from our team," head coach Jay Vidovich said. "We were without some guys we have grown accustomed to having in our starting 11. But some of our younger guys stepped up and performed well. To tie after being two goals down without four starters, I think this will give our team a spark. When those four return, we'll be even stronger than before."
After a scoreless first half, Maryland scored twice in quick succession. The first came on a penalty kick by A.J. Herrera following a controversial foul in the box by Jones. Nonetheless, Herrera capitalized and less than 90 seconds later, the Deacons found themselves trailing by two. Domenic Mediate's shot from the top of the box made it 2-0 in the 54th minute before Wake Forest began to rally.
Wake Forest returns to action on Tuesday night at UNC Greensboro in a Wake Forest/UNCG doubleheader. The women's teams will play at 5:30 p.m. before the men's teams take to the pitch at 7:30 p.m.
