WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's soccer team lost its home opener Friday night, 1-0 to No. 7 Santa Clara in the second game of the Wake Forest Nike Tournament. The Demon Deacons out shot the Broncos 7-5 in the first half and had a couple good looks at the goal, but couldn't get a shot past Santa Clara goalkeeper Alyssa Sobolik. The ACC went 0-2 against the West Coast Conference in the first day of the Wake Forest Nike Tournament as Santa Clara beat Wake Forest and Portland defeated Florida State.
"The defeat was frustrating," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "Santa Clara is a quality team. They regained composure in the second half and controlled the rest of the game. We had some quality chances in the first half. They took over in the second half. It's hard to beat Santa Clara. It really hurt us losing Joline Charlton."
Barely eight minutes into the match, starting Wake Forest forward Joline Charlton was carried off the field with a sprained ankle and did not return. Katherine Winstead had two shots on goal for the Demon Deacons, both stopped by Sobolik. At the 32:03 mark, Santa Clara freshman midfielder Jessica Ballweg fired a rocket from 40 yards out, through Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan's hands, for the game-winning goal. The Broncos dominated the rest of the match, out shooting the Demon Deacons 6-0 in the second frame.
In the first game of the Wake Forest Nike Tournament, No. 5 Portland defeated No. 13 Florida State 3-1. The Pilots out shot the Seminoles 26-10, getting on the board in the 10th minute of play with a goal by Christine Sinclair. Jez Raliff tied the game in the 34th minute, scoring for Florida State, but Portland's Betsy Barr headed in the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute. Jessica Heller sealed the victory for the Pilots by connecting with a pass from Lisa Casagrande in the 78th minute - Casagrande's second assist on the day.
Florida State falls to 2-1 on the season and Portland improves to 2-1. Wake Forest falls to 0-1-1 on the year and Santa Clara improves to 3-0. All four teams will return to action Sunday, Sept. 9 for the conclusion of the Wake Forest Nike Tournament. Florida State and Santa Clara will square off at noon, followed by Wake Forest and Portland.
