Spry Stadium - The Wake Forest men's soccer team dropped its home opener to Dartmouth College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Spry Stadium.
The Deacons (2-1), who entered the game ranked as high as ninth in the country, outshot the Big Green by an overwhelming 21-3 margin. They were unable to put a ball into the goal as Dartmouth goalkeeper Ben Gebre-Medhin who made three saves.
Dartmouth got on the board on Danny Markman's unassisted goal in the 19th minute following a corner kick and a flurry of activity in the penalty area. From there, the Big Green held on. Wake Forest outshot Dartmouth 13-0 in the second half and held a commanding 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Although piling up 21 shots, the Deacons did not have a high number of golden scoring opportunities as just four shots were put on net.
With Wake Forest applying all the pressure late in the second half, the Deacons' best chance came in the game's final minute. Sophomore Jeremiah White touched a ball into the penalty area for junior Bobby Gehring who was one on one with the goalkeeper. His shot appeared to be right on target as it sailed past the Dartmouth goalkeeper but clanged off the crossbar and away from the other attacking players.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Tuesday September 11 at home against Charleston Southern. Game time at Spry Stadium is 7:00 p.m.
