Wake Forest Jumps Back Into ACC Action Saturday At UNC
Wake Forest and North Carolina, traditional rivals looking to stay unbeaten in ACC play, meet Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill (4:00 p.m./ESPN). The 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons, 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, have won two straight including a 67-52 victory over visiting Richmond Wednesday night. Wake Forest shot 51.0 percent and out-rebounded the Spiders, 48-24. North Carolina, 5-5 and 1-0, has won three straight games including an impressive 34-point win over visiting Texas A&M on Sunday. The Tar Heels are led by Jason Capel (16.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game) and Kris Lang (13.2 ppg. and 7.5 rpg.). Wake Forest is looking for its first win in Chapel Hill since a 79-70 victory over the No. 2-ranked Tar Heels on Feb. 28, 1995. North Carolina leads the all-time series, 146-57. UNC swept the regular season series last season including a 70-69 win in Chapel Hill on Jan. 6, 2001. What's at stake for Wake Saturday: - Wake Forest has won three consecutive ACC road games -- all coming last season when the Deacons beat Florida State, Clemson and NC State. - The Deacons will try to snap a six-game losing streak in Chapel Hill. - Wake will attempt to begin ACC play 2-0 for the first time since 1996-97 -- Tim Duncan's senior year. - A ranked WFU team will play an unranked UNC team for the first time ever.
A Quick Look At The Deacons
Wake Forest is a veteran team with four seniors and one junior in the starting lineup. The experience has paid off for the Deacons, who are 5-0 in games decided by less than seven points. The Deacons prefer an up-tempo game although they have scored less than 70 points in each of the last three games. Wake has been solid on the boards this season, out-rebounding opponents by nearly six rebounds per game, including a 48-24 rebound margin against Richmond Wednesday. Senior Darius Songaila (17.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game) is having an All-ACC type season. He has scored in double figures in every game, shoots 54.8 percent from the floor and 82.5 percent from the free throw line. Junior Josh Howard (13.2 ppg. and 8.2 rpg.) leads the team in rebounding and enters the North Carolina game with three consecutive double-doubles. Senior guard Craig Dawson (11.1 ppg.) ranks among the ACC leaders in three-point field goals made (35) and three-point field goal percentage (.407). Senior Antwan Scott (11.0 ppg. and 5.0 rpg.) is coming off his worst outing of the season (0 points vs. Richmond) but is shooting 58.5 percent from the floor. Senior Broderick Hicks (8.5 ppg.) leads the team in assists (47) and he has started at point guard in all 13 games. Freshman Vytas Danelius (6.3 ppg.) is Wake's top scorer off the bench and he contributed 10 points Wednesday night. Junior transfer Steve Lepore, senior guard Ervin Murray and freshmen Taron Downey and Jamaal Levy are all part of the rotation.
Wake Forest Gets 10th Win Of The Season, 67-52 Vs. Richmond
Wake Forest was sloppy, committing a season-high-tying 21 turnovers, but the Deacons were pleased to walk away with a 67-52 win over visiting Richmond Wednesday night. Junior Josh Howard recorded his third straight double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and senior Darius Songaila scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards to lead the Deacons. Wake Forest shot 51.0 percent and out-rebounded the Spiders, 48-24. The Deacons also held Richmond to just 30.3 percent shooting. More from Wednesday's win over Richmond: - Howard's 12 rebounds tied for the most single-game boards by a Deacon this season. - Songaila was 11-of-13 from the free throw line. He was the only Deacon to attempt a free throw Wednesday. - Wake Forest had season lows for three-point field goal attempts (14) and steals (3). - Richmond's 34 three-point field goal attempts were the most by a Deacon opponent since Saint Louis launched 39 threes in 1994-95. - The Spiders' 52 points were the fewest by a Deacon opponent this season.
Deacon Streaks
- The Deacons have an eight-game homecourt winning streak with a perfect 8-0 record this season. Wake has not lost in Lawrence Joel Coliseum since an 82-80 defeat to No. 4-ranked Duke on Feb. 24, 2001. - Wake Forest has won 23 consecutive non-conference home games. Wake's last non-conference loss at home came against 19th-ranked Arkansas on Dec. 23, 1998. - Wake Forest has lost its last two road games -- at Kansas and at St. John's. - Wake Forest has made at least one three-point field goal in 268 consecutive games. - The Deacons are 5-0 this season in games decided by five points or less. - Wake Forest is 5-0 when scoring 80 points or more. - WFU is 9-0 this season when shooting a higher field goal percentage than its opponent. - Wake has used the same starting lineup -- Broderick Hicks, Craig Dawson, Antwan Scott, Darius Songaila and Josh Howard -- in all 13 games. - Songaila has scored in double figures in 14 straight games dating back to last season. - Dawson has made at least one three-point field goal in every game this season. Throw out the game against Maryland in last year's ACC Tournament when Dawson played just one minute before getting injured, he has made at least one three-pointer in 22 straight games.

UNC Edged Wake Forest In Chapel Hill Last Season, 70-69
Brendan Haywood's lay-up with 3.3 seconds remaining gave North Carolina a 70-69 win over Wake Forest Jan. 6, 2001 at the Smith Center. Wake Forest entered the game undefeated and ranked No. 4 nationally. After the loss to the Tar Heels, the Deacons went on to lose 10 of their final 17 games of the season.
Deacon-Tar Heel Connections
- North Carolina assistant coach Doug Wojcik was the starting point guard on the Wheeling (WV) Central Catholic High School team that was coached by current Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser. That Central Catholic team won the state championship. Prosser later coached Dave Wojcik (Doug's brother) and Dave went on to serve as an assistant coach with Prosser at Xavier. - Wake Forest senior guard Craig Dawson is the nephew of former North Carolina standout Jerry Stackhouse. - Wake's Dawson, Ervin Murray and Antwan Scott once played on the same AAU team with UNC's Kris Lang and former Tar Heels Julius Peppers and Brendan Haywood. - Wake Forest media relations intern Laura McCoy is a 2001 UNC graduate. - Wake Forest has five players from the state of North Carolina on its roster -- Ervin Murray (Wallace), Craig Dawson (Kinston), Antwan Scott (New Bern), Taron Downey (Oxford) and Josh Howard (Winston-Salem).
Deacons Find Comfort Zone In Lawrence Joel Coliseum
Wake Forest is making Lawrence Joel Coliseum an unfriendly place for visitors. The Deacons own an eight-game homecourt winning streak and are putting up big numbers within the friendly confines. Wake averages more than 84 points per game and shoots nearly 51 percent at home.

Wake's Schedule One Of Its Most Difficult Slates Ever
In November and December, Wake Forest played four nationally-ranked teams. The last time the Deacs played four ranked opponents before Jan. 1 came in the 1953-54 season. And the most difficult portion of the Wake schedule is on the horizon. Consider: - According to the latest RPI ratings (CollegeRPI.com), five Wake Forest opponents are ranked in the top 10. - Using the AP poll, Wake Forest will play three consecutive games against No. 4 Virginia (Jan. 15), No. 1 Duke (Jan. 19) and No. 8 Maryland (Jan. 23). The last time Wake played three consecutive ranked opponents came in 1994-95 -- vs. No. 11 Duke, No. 9 Maryland and No. 22 Georgia Tech. The last time the Deacons played three straight teams ranked in the top 10 came in 1985-86 -- vs. No. 5 Georgia Tech, No. 1 North Carolina and No. 3 Duke. - Wake Forest is 2-2 this season against ranked teams. Last season the Deacons won two games against ranked teams all year. - Seven of Wake's final 14 games will come against teams currently ranked in the AP top 25. - Wake's schedule, according to College RPI.com, is the most difficult in the ACC.

Darius Songaila Enjoying An All-ACC-Type Season So Far
Perhaps senior Darius Songaila is motivated because he was left off the preseason All-ACC team, or maybe he's flourishing in coach Skip Prosser's system. Regardless, Songaila is enjoying his finest season as a Deacon. Over his last five games, Songaila has averaged 19.6 points, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 59.3 percent from the floor and 86.8 percent from the free throw line. More on Songaila: - Songaila will make his 100th career start Saturday at North Carolina and he will play in his 110th career game. - He leads the team and ranks fourth in the ACC in scoring (17.8 points per game). - His scoring average is the highest by a Wake Forest player since Tim Duncan averaged 20.8 points as a senior in 1997. - Songaila is the only Deacon to score in double figures in every game this season. He has scored in double figures 86 times in his career. - He ranks fifth in the ACC in free throw percentage (.825) and he has shot 88.4 percent (61-of-69) from the line over the last eight games combined. - His career free throw percentage (.821) is the sixth-highest in Wake Forest history. - Songaila is second on the team and ranks 10th in the ACC in rebounding (7.3 rpg.). - He ranks 17th in Wake Forest history with 632 career rebounds. - He ranks ninth in Wake Forest history with 83 career blocked shots. - Songaila has five double-doubles this season and he owns 14 career double-doubles. - He ranks fourth in the ACC in field goal percentage (.548). - He ranks 15th in Wake Forest career scoring history with 1,483 points. He is 17 points shy of becoming just the 15th Deacon to score 1,500 points. - Songaila is just the 11th player in Wake history with 1,400 points and 600 rebounds. - Only six players in school history have made more free throws than Songaila (462). - He has scored 20 or more points in a game 14 times, including four times this season. - Songaila was named to the Preseason NIT All-Tournament team after his performances against Fresno State and Syracuse.

Scoring 4th (17.8) Free Throw Percentage 5th (.825) Rebounding 10th (7.3) Field Goal Percentage 4th (.548) Blocked Shots 9th (1.08)
Milestones Will Be Reached Darius Songaila will join elite Wake Forest company Saturday when he starts for the 100th time in his career. Only seven other players in Wake history have started 100 games (see left). Other milestones that could be reached Saturday: - Songaila needs 17 points to reach 1,500 for his career. - Songaila's 10th field goal attempt will be the 1,000th of his career. - Craig Dawson's first three-point field goal attempt will be the 500th of his career. - Josh Howard's first point will be the 900th of his career.
Songaila Gaining Reputation As Clutch Performer
Senior Darius Songaila is the type of player who wants the ball in his hands at crunch time. And almost each time, the results have been great for Wake Forest: - Songaila hit a lay-up with 2.7 seconds remaining to lift Wake Forest to a 79-78 win over UNC-Wilmington in the season opener. - Nov. 21 against Fresno State, Songaila's follow tip with 1.7 seconds left gave the Deacons a 62-61 win over the Bulldogs in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT at Madison Square Garden. - Songaila's two free throws with 3:37 remaining broke a 57-57 tie with 19th-ranked Marquette on Dec. 29. The Deacons led the rest of the way en route to a 64-59 win over the Golden Eagles.
Howard Enters Carolina Game With Three Straight Double-Doubles
Junior Josh Howard went through a mini-slump in early December (9 points vs. Kansas, 3 points vs. SC State), but he has been Wake's hottest player since late December. Howard enters Saturday's game with three consecutive double-doubles including a 16-point, 12-rebound effort against Richmond Wednesday night. More on Howard: - At 6-6, Howard leads the team and ranks seventh in the ACC in rebounding (8.2 rpg.). - He is second on the team and 16th in the ACC in scoring (13.2 ppg.). - He ranks second in the ACC in offensive rebounds per game (3.60). - He ranks fifth in the ACC in field goal percentage (.526). - Only six players in the ACC have more double-doubles this season than Howard (four). - Just a junior, Howard is one point shy of his 900th career point.

Freshman Trio Making Immediate Impact For The Deacons
Wake Forest's three freshmen -- forwards Vytas Danelius and Jamaal Levy and guard Taron Downey -- are becoming more and more a part of the regular rotation. Danelius leads all non-starters in scoring (6.3 ppg.) while averaging more than 14 minutes of action per game. He is shooting a lofty 64.2 percent from the field and he's coming off a 10-point effort against Richmond Wednesday. Levy showed a glimpse of his potential Dec. 16 against Florida State when he scored a career-high 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made two three-point field goals. Levy is getting more playing time now after missing a week of practice earlier in the season when he returned home to Panama for a family emergency. Downey is proving to be a steady back-up to Broderick Hicks at the point guard position, averaging nearly eight minutes of action per game.
Downtown Dawson
Senior Craig Dawson is proving to be one of the most prolific and accurate perimeter shooters in the ACC. Dawson leads Wake Forest and ranks fourth in the ACC for three-point field goals made (2.69 per game) and he is shooting 40.7 percent (33-of-81) from behind the arc, which ranks third in the ACC. More on Dawson: - He has made at least one three-point field goal in every game this season and he has made at least two three-pointers in every game but one. - Dawson has made three or more three-pointers in a game six times this season, 26 times in his career. - He ranks fourth in Wake Forest history with 190 career three-point field goals. - He ranks 25th in ACC history for career three-point field goals made. - Dawson ranks 20th in the ACC in scoring (11.1 ppg.). - He ranks 33rd in Wake Forest career scoring history with 1,065 points. He will move into 32nd place with just five more points. - He has attempted 499 career three-pointers, which ranks fourth in WFU history. - Dawson has played in 107 career games.
Scott One Of The ACC's Most Improved Players
Senior Antwan Scott, in his first year as a starter, is making the most of his senior season. He has nearly doubled his statistics from a year ago, easily making him one of the ACC's most improved players. Consider: - He ranks second in the ACC in blocked shots (1.92 per game). - Scott leads the team in minutes played (29.5). - His field goal percentage (.585) would be the second-highest in the ACC, but he does not have the minimum number of field goals made to qualify. - He ranks 18th in the ACC in scoring (11.0 ppg.) and 20th in rebounding (5.0 rpg.). - Scott now ranks fifth on Wake Forest's all-time blocked shots list after recently passing Rod Griffin (113 blocks from 1975-78). Scott has 118 career rejections. - He has scored in double figures in 10 of 13 games this season. - He has shot better than 50 percent from the field in 10 of 13 games this season.

Deacons In National Polls For Sixth Straight Week
Wake Forest moved up two notches in the Associated Press poll (from 25th to 23rd) and one notch in the ESPN/USA Today poll (from 25th to 24th) this week. Wake Forest has been ranked in both polls for six consecutive weeks and the Deacons have been in the AP poll in 25 of the last 26 weeks. Using the AP poll as an indicator, Wake is facing one of the nation's most difficult schedules this season. Six of the nation's top 16 teams -- No. 1 Duke, No. 2 Kansas, No. 4 Virginia, No. 8 Maryland, No. 13 Cincinnati and No. 16 Syracuse -- are on the Wake Forest schedule. More on Wake Forest and the national polls: - Wake Forest is 2-2 against ranked foes this year. The Deacons beat No. 25 Marquette and No. 23 Fresno State and lost to No. 18 Syracuse and No. 4 Kansas. - Wake has already won as many games over nationally-ranked teams this season (two) than in all of last season (2-8). - The Deacons' win over No. 23 Fresno State Nov. 21 snapped an eight-game losing streak against nationally-ranked teams. - Wake Forest is ranked 13th by CollegeRPI.com, 23rd by The Sporting News, 22nd by CBS Sportsline.com and 22nd in the Sagarin computer rankings. - If the rankings hold, Wake would play consecutive games vs. No. 4 Virginia (Jan. 15), No. 1 Duke (Jan. 19) and No. 8 Maryland (Jan. 23).
Beating The Highly-Ranked

The Skip Prosser Era In Full Swing At Wake Forest
Skip Prosser, who previously served as the head coach at Loyola (MD) and Xavier, is beginning his first season at Wake Forest. His record at Wake Forest is 10-3. His career record, in nine seasons, is 175-81. Prosser comes to Winston-Salem after serving seven seasons as the head coach at Xavier, where he compiled a record of 148-65 (.695) and led the Musketeers to six postseason appearances. A 1972 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Prosser's teams won 20 games or more six times in seven years at Xavier. He has the 18th-highest winning percentage among active Division I coaches and he helped Xavier earn one of the nation's highest graduation rates. Joining Prosser on the coaching staff are former Xavier assistants Jeff Battle and Dino Gaudio and former Musketeer players Chris Mack (assistant coach) and Pat Kelsey (director of basketball operations).

Wake Forest's Skip Prosser has coached against the nation's No. 1-ranked team three times and he has come away a winner twice. Prosser's Xavier teams beat No. 1 Cincinnati in 1999-00 and in 1996-97. His only loss to a No. 1-ranked team was an overtime decision to No. 1 Massachusetts in 1995-96. Prosser, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Maryland's Gary Williams are the only current Atlantic Coast Conference coaches to own more than one victory against a No. 1-ranked team.
Senior Class' Accomplishments Continue To Grow
With five fourth-year seniors on its roster, including four seniors in the starting lineup, Wake Forest has one of the ACC's most experienced groups. Four of Wake's top five scorers -- Darius Songaila (17.8 ppg.), Antwan Scott (11.0 ppg.), Craig Dawson (11.1 ppg.) and Broderick Hicks (8.5 ppg.) -- are all seniors. Seniors lead Wake in basically every statistical category. Those five seniors -- Songaila, Dawson, Hicks, Ervin Murray and Scott -- have enjoyed much success over the last four years. Consider: - Wake's senior class has appeared in postseason play every season, including an NCAA Tournament appearance last season. - Over the last four seasons, Wake Forest is a combined 68-42 (.619). - The seniors have been a part of three wins over teams ranked in the top 10. - In 2001, Wake Forest won the postseason NIT championship. - The five seniors have combined to play in 539 career games.
