Game 15: Wake Forest at Clemson
The Wake Forest women??s soccer team hits the road again, traveling to Clemson, S.C. for its third conference match of the season. The 11th-ranked Demon Deacons will face the 16th-ranked Tigers on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 pm.
The Deacs meet the Tigers for their 13th-straight match-up. Clemson leads the series, 8-2-2, with the last meeting ending with a 1-1 tie in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest only owns two wins over Clemson, the last victory occuring on Sept. 17, 1999 in Deacon territory.
The Deacs are coming off of a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Florida State, while the Tigers lost to North Carolina in overtime, 2-1, this past weekend.
Wake Forest defeats Florida State in 2ot
The seventh-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer squad grabbed its 11th victory of the season, defeating 17th-ranked Florida State, 3-2, in double-overtime. The Demon Deacons improve to 11-2-1, including 2-0-1 in conference play, while the Seminoles drop to 7-3-3 and 1-1-1 in the conference.
In the 19th minute, Junior Alena Thom put the Deacs on the scoreboard with a goal from the right side of the box, on assists by Katie Johnson and Melanie Schneider. Freshman Sarah Kozey made the score 2-0, scoring on a shot off of the crossbar by Melanie Schneider at the 31:16 mark. Florida State's Cindy Schofield answered with a goal at the 40:12 mark on an assist from Leah Gallegos. The score at the half was 2-1, in favor of Wake Forest.
Schofield tied the score on a penalty kick with 27 minutes left in regulation. The teams battled for 40 more minutes, extending the game into two overtimes, before Thom scored the golden goal at the 8:24 mark of the second extra period.
Wake Forest outshot Florida State, 16-10, including five shots on goal. Thom led the team with four shots, followed by Sarah Kozey with three. Deacon keeper Erin Regan recorded five saves, while Seminole keeper Kerri York was credited with two.
Clemson Tigers
The Clemson Tigers come into Thursday??s match-up against Wake Forest with an overall record of 8-5 and 2-2 in conference play.
The Tigers began the season with wins over Georgia and Wofford, before falling to Portland and Santa Clara. Other wins for Clemson this season include South Carolina, Butler, Virginia, College of Charleston, Duke and Furman. Other losses for the Tigers have come at the hands of Tennessee, Florida State and North Carolina.
The Tigers are coming off of a 2-1 overtime loss to top-ranked North Carolina on Sunday.
100 All-Time Victories
With the 4-2 victory over UNCG on Sept. 25, the Wake Forest women??s soccer program earned its 100th all-time victory. The program??s record now stands at 102-70-12 since beginning in 1994. The Deacs look to continue their outstanding start on Oct. 17 against 16th-ranked Clemson.
Blue-Collar Deacs
The 2002 women??s soccer squad has dubbed themselves as a ??blue-collar?? team and taken it to the next level. The Deacs know that it is going to take a lot of effort this year if they want to be successful. They have decided as a team to work hard and earn every goal. ??Our theme has been 'blue-collar'. This team is a blue-collar team; we're going to work through everything,?? stated Coach da Luz. ??They've created more opportunities for themselves through teamwork, pressure and trapping for goals than our prior teams have been able to do."
So far the efforts have paid off as the ??blue-collar?? Deacs are 11-2-1 and beating opponents in every category.
Breaking Records
Junior Alena Thom tallied three assists against Elon (Sept. 3), setting a single-game record in that category. The record was most recently held by Katherine Winstead with two assists against Tulane on October 12, 2001.
Senior Joline Charlton is also looking to break several records this season. She currently is second in season points (24) and shots (71), third in goals (10) and fourth (7) in assists. In career records, Charlton ranks fourth in goals (20), points (53) and shots (146).
Senior Liz McDowell slipped into the fifth spot in career games started with 78. She has started in all 14 games this season to go along with the 64 starts she already owned. McDowell is six starts away from becoming Wake??s all-time leader in career games started.
Wake in the ACC
As a team, Wake Forest is third in the ACC in goals allowed per game with 0.93, third in goals against average with 0.90 and tied for second with four shutouts. The Deacs are second in points per game, averaging 7.5 per contest, third in assists per game with 2.64 and third in goals per game with 2.43. Individually, several Deacs appear in the statistical categories as well. Katherine Winstead ranks fifth in goals (8) and fourth in points (21). Alena Thom is tied for seventh in assists (.430 apg) and fifth with 1.43 points per game. Thom is also eighth in shots per game (2.79). Goalkeeper Erin Regan ranks second with 0.97 goals against average, while Alli Hunt is tied for seventh in assists per game with 0.43.
The Deacs vs. Opponents
Wake Forest has dominated the field this season, leading their opponents in every category. The Deacs have outshot opponents 230 to 113, including 124 shots on goal to their opponents?? 56. Wake has scored 34 goals on the season and only allowed 13. The Deacs have held opponents to 40 points while tallying 104. Wake has recorded 36 assists on the season as well.
Injury Report
Senior Lindsey Griffin is out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. She will receive a medical redshirt and return to competition next season for the Deacs.
Up Next: Colorado College
Wake Forest will return to Spry Stadium to close out the final four games of the 2002 season this weekend. The Demon Deacons will face their last non-conference opponent on the schedule, Colorado College, Oct. 20 at 1:00 pm.
Getting To Spry Stadium
At the I-40/Business-40 split, take Business-40 towards downtown Winston-Salem. Take the Cherry Street exit and proceed north through the downtown area. Cherry Street then becomes University Parkway. Continue past Joel Coliseum on the right and then bear left at the fork in the road. Approximately one mile past the Coliseum, take the Polo Road exit and make a left turn on Polo Road. Spry Stadium will be 1/2 mile ahead on the left. Turn left onto campus at the stoplight and take the first road to the right to access the parking lot. No parking pass is necessary.

Records
Wake Forest enters the Clemson game with a record of 11-2-1, 2-0-1 in the league. The Demon Deacons are posting their best record since the program began in 1994. Clemson stands at 8-5 overall, 2-2 in the league entering this week??s matchup.
The Series Clemson owns bragging rights over Wake Forest, leading the series 8-2-2. The last time the Demon Deacons defeated the Tigers occured on Sept.17, 1999, with Wake grabbing the 2-1 victory in Winston-Salem.
The Tigers have shutout the Deacs four times, including three of the last four outings against each other. The series also includes three overtime decisions.
Rankings
Despite the 2-0 loss to Tennessee last week, the Demon Deacons are still ranked in the top-20 in every major soccer poll. Wake Forest was bumped up one to the 11th spot in Soccer America and Soccer Times, moved to 14th in Soccer Buzz and jumped to 15th in the NSCAA poll.
Clemson dropped out of the all of the polls except for Soccer America (#16) this week after falling to top-ranked North Carolina, 2-1, in overtime. The Tigers have been ranked as high as 12th this season.
The Coaches
Sixth-year Deacon head coach Tony da Luz comes into Thursday??s match-up with an overall record of 117-82-12, including 71-40-9 at Wake Forest. Against the Tigers, da Luz is credited with only two wins, the last one in 1999.
Head coach Todd Bramble is in his second year with the Clemson Tigers. He posted a 15-5-1 record last season and is currently 23-10-1 at the helm of the Tigers. Bramble owns a 0-0-1 record against the Demon Deacons.
Match-ups
This Thursday??s meeting between the Demon Deacons and the Tigers will feature some of the league??s top performers. There will be a showdown between two of the ACC??s top-five scorers in Deliah Arrington (nine goals) and Katherine Winstead (eight goals). The game will also match-up Arrington and Alena Thom, who are among the league??s top-10 in assists, shots and game-winning goals.
