InIn a rematch of last year's first round match-up, the Wake Forest women's soccer squad shutout William & Mary, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Chapel Hill. The victory was the first for the Demon Deacons since a 4-0 win over Colorado College on Oct. 20.
With her first goal of the season, senior Melissa Murray-Hobbs put Wake Forest on the scoreboard in the 31st minutes of first half, looping the ball into the net from 22 yards out. William & Mary had four shots, but did not convert in the first half.
All-ACC freshman, Sarah Kozey, gave the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead with 23 minutes left in the game, dropping the ball into the back of the goal on a cross from Alena Thom. Kozey was credited with her ninth goal of the season, making her the team's leading scorer this season.
The Deacs only gave up seven shots in the entire game, while tallying 10. Both goalies, Wake's Erin Regan and William & Mary's Nikki Villot were credited with four saves a piece.
"The girls came out and we did what we had to do," stated coach da Luz. "We were focused and took advantage of William & Mary's mistakes. We wanted to lead going into the first half, which is something we haven't done in a while. Now we have to concentrate on North Carolina. They are not a surprise, it's a game we have to play and try to advance. It helps that we are comfortable playing them and know what to expect, and will hopefully come out with the win."
With the win, Wake Forest moves to 13-7-1 overall and the loss takes the Tribe to 13-7-1 on the season. The Deacs advance to the second round of the tournament, facing North Carolina for the third time in 19 days on Sunday at 1:00 pm in Chapel Hill.
