WINSTON-SALEM -- Dr. David Martin, professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, was named WFU's director of sports medicine today.
Martin replaces Dr. Walt Curl, who served in the capacity for 15 years. Curl recently left the position to become the chairman of the department of orthopedics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Martin will direct the Wake Forest sports medicine program, which is recognized as one of the most comprehensive and qualified departments of its kind in the country. On campus, the department of sports medicine is administered on a daily basis by assistant athletic director/sports medicine Greg Collins.
"We are excited to name Dr. David Martin to this important position," Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said. "David cares a great deal for Wake Forest University and he has done a great job working with our student-athletes and our sports medicine staff."
A 1978 graduate of Dartmouth College, Martin went on to graduate from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1982. Martin first came to Wake Forest in 1990 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1995. In July he was elevated to full professorship. Martin has been recognized as a team physician since 1996.
Prior to arriving in Winston-Salem, Martin worked as an assistant professor and instructor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1988-90. He has worked with a variety of athletics on the high school, college and professional level since 1987.
A Major in the United States Army Reserve, Martin assisted the Operation Desert Storm effort by serving at the Womack Army Community Hospital in Fort Bragg, NC from February to May of 1991.
