Wake Forest Football Notes
Wake Forest at Maryland
Nov. 30, 2002
* Today's game captains are #72 Blake Henry and #93 Calvin Pace.
* Pace did not start today's game, halting his team-high streak of 26 consecutive starts. Free safety Quintin Williams now owns the team's longest starting streak at 27 games. Pace also owns a team-best 32 career starts, a mark that was tied today by fullback Ovie Mughelli.
* Quarterback James MacPherson threw just his fourth interception of the season on the Deacs' first drive of the game, with a pass that was picked off by Maryland's E.J. Henderson. But MacPherson made up for it later in the play, recovering Henderson's fumble, getting the ball back with a first down for the Deacs.
* MacPherson has thrown INTs in just two of 12 games this season, with three picks at Clemson and one today. He finished the 2002 season interception-free in home games at Groves Stadium.
* Senior wide receiver Jax Landfried has caught a pass in 19 straight games. His 78-yard reception from Cory Randolph in the third quarter was the longest non-scoring pass completion in Wake Forest history, and the third-longest pass completion overall. Landfried has caught two of Wake's three-longest passes this season, including a 53-yarder from MacPherson against NC State.
* Maryland's field goal in the first half marked the first time since Oct. 19 (Clemson game) that Wake's opponent scored first.
* The Deacs went scoreless in the first quarter for just the second time this season, with the first time being the Purdue game on Sept. 21. Wake was also scoreless at halftime for the first time since Nov. 10 of last season, when it trailed 24-0 at North Carolina. (WFU went on to win that game, 32-31).
* Maryland's 27-0 halftime lead marked the biggest deficit for the Deacons this season. The previous largest deficit was 18 points at NC State in the third quarter (24-6).
* Maryland was the third top 25 opponent the Deacs have faced this season. Wake lost to all three - NC State, Florida State and Maryland.
* Senior Tarence Williams recorded his and 21st and 22nd career rushing touchdowns against the Terps, remaining in second place on Wake's career rushing TD list. He also ranks tied for sixth on the career touchdowns list. Williams also moved up on the career scoring list, into 11th place with 134 career points.
* Williams also went over the 100-yard rushing mark for the third time this season and 12th time in his career, finishing with 108 yards. He also passed the 2,500-yard mark for his career, moving into fourth place in the Wake record book with 2,528 yards.
* Placekicker Matt Wisnosky moved into fourth place on the single-season scoring chart with 76 points on the season.
