The Wake Forest women's soccer team had three players honored Wednesday night at the 2002 ACC Women's Soccer Banquet. A. B. Robbins and Katherine Winstead received second-team All-ACC honors, while Sarah Kozey was named to the All-Freshman squad.
Robbins, a junior defender from Richmond, VA, adds the honors to the All-ACC Freshman selection received in 2000. As the team's top returning scorer, Robbins has seen action in all of Wake's games this season, while starting 18. Robbins brings a tall powerful presence to the field and has been an integral part of a Demon Deacon defense that has shutout five teams, held opponents to 22 goals, 23 assists and only allowed 167 shots in 2002. Robbins is credited with four goals and one assist this season, including scores in the shutouts over Oregon, Loyola Marymount and Sacramento State.
Winstead, a junior midfielder from Raleigh, NC, leads the team this season in scoring with nine goals, while also contributing five assists. A hardworking, versatile athlete, Winstead scored the game winning goals this season against Georgia and Maryland, as well as key goals in the wins over UNC Greensboro and Elon and the tie at NC State. Winstead, who is currently 10th in the league in scoring, has been an important element this season in propelling Wake Forest to its best start in the program's nine-year history.
Kozey, a freshman forward from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, is heralded as one of this season's playmakers for the Demon Deacons. Kozey is second on the team in scoring, with eight goals, and is credited with five assists as well. As a rookie, Kozey has seen action in all 19 games, with 15 starts, while leading the team with 54 shots, is third in assists, second in game-winning goals and third in points. Kozey contributed key goals in the wins over Florida State, Davidson, UNC Greensboro and scored the only goals in the losses to North Carolina and Duke.
Wake Forest, 12-6-1 overall, finished the regular season tied for seventh with a record of 2-4-1. The Demon Deacons, who drew the eighth seed in the tournament, will face top-seeded North Carolina on Thursday at 5:30 pm in Tallahassee.
