WINSTON-SALEM -- Wake Forest senior defensive end Calvin Pace, Wake Forest's first 1st team All-American since 1992, received another presitigious honor today when he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year by The Sporting News.
The publication also named NC State's Chuck Amato as ACC Coach of the Year and Virginia quarterback Matt Schaub the Offensive Player of the Year. Deacon offensive guard Blake Henry was named to TSN's All-ACC team along with Pace.
Earlier this year, Pace was named first team All-American by the AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) and first team All-ACC by ACSWA. Pace is recovering from a leg injury and is hopeful of playing against Oregon in the Dec. 30 Seattle Bowl.
Pace will leave Wake Forest with his name etched in the Deacon record books. His 53 career tackles-for-loss are the most in school history. He is one sack shy of tying Michael McCrary (30 sacks) for the most career sacks in WFU history. This season he ranks first in the ACC in tackles-for-loss per game and fifth in the ACC with eight sacks.
Pace, who was named the team's Most Valuable Player last week, will participate in the 2003 Senior Bowl.
