Deacons try to keep unblemished record Wednesday vs. SC State
Wake Forest, 4-0 and inching towards a spot in the national polls, plays the second of five straight home games Wednesday night against South Carolina State (7:05 p.m./no TV). The youth-laden Demon Deacons are coming off a 73-49 win over visiting SMU Sunday night. Sophomore Vytas Danelius recorded a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Wake Forest out-rebounded the Mustangs, 48-26. South Carolina State, 1-4, lost on the road at Jacksonville, 76-68, on Saturday. The Bulldogs are led by Moses Malone, Jr., who scored 22 points, went 12-of-12 from the free throw line and produced five steals in the loss at Jacksonville. Wake Forest will continue its homestand Saturday against undefeated St. John??s (3:30 p.m./ESPN). Wednesday??s game marks the third meeting between the Deacons and Bulldogs. Wake Forest leads the series, 2-0, including a 115-85 win last season at Joel Coliseum.
Quick notes on the Deacons
- Wake Forest begins the season 4-0 for the fourth straight season. - The Deacons lead the ACC in rebound margin (+14.0) and in free throw percentage (.756). - WFU is not ranked in the national polls, but the Deacons continue to receive more votes for the polls each week. - The Deacs are led by senior All-American candidate Josh Howard, who is averaging 18.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. - Wake Forest??s five-man freshman class is combining to average 35.9 points per game.
A quick look at the Deacons
With eight scholarship freshmen and sophomores on the roster, Wake Forest has one of the youngest teams in college basketball. The Deacons start two freshmen and two sophomores, along with senior All-American candidate Josh Howard. Howard (18.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game), is one of the premier players in college basketball. Howard is coming off perhaps his best defensive effort of the year, holding SMU standout Quinton Ross to 3-of-15 shooting. Howard ranks in the top 15 in 11 of 12 ACC statistical categories including No. 3 in scoring. Freshman center Eric Williams, 6-9 and 270 pounds, is averaging 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 64.3 percent from the floor and 81.3 percent from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Taron Downey (11.8 ppg.), a vocal leader for the Deacs, is one of the ACC??s best ballhandlers and three-point shooters. Freshman guard Justin Gray (10.8 ppg.) scored a career-best 20 points in the win at Wisconsin and he made key plays down the stretch to seal the win. Sophomore Vytas Danelius (11.3 ppg., 10.3 rpg.) starts at power forward and is one of three players in the ACC averaging a double-double. Three players, including a pair of freshmen, have played key roles off the bench. Sophomore forward Jamaal Levy (4.3 ppg.) is coming off the most complete game of his career -- 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals against SMU. Freshman Trent Strickland (5.3 ppg.) is providing a spark off the bench. Freshman Chris Ellis (4.5 ppg.) had six points and four rebounds in 18 minutes Sunday night. The Deacons?? rebounding has been a big surprise. Wake Forest is out-rebounding foes by an average of 14.0 boards per game. Wake Forest is holding opponents to just 41.5 percent shooting.
A quick look at the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs have already played their share of difficult non-conference road games, losing at South Carolina, Auburn and Jacksonville. South Carolina State is 1-4 with its only win coming against Alabama A&M, 75-68. SC State is led by senior guard Moses Malone, Jr. (17.0 ppg.), an outstanding shooter who scored 22 points in a losing effort at Jacksonville on Saturday. Malone, who went 12-of-12 from the free throw line against the Dolphins, is shooting 40.6 percent from three-point range and he??s averaging nearly three steals per game. Sophomore swingman Thurman Zimmerman (10.4 ppg., 5.6 rpg.) is the only other Bulldog averaging double-figure points. Three other Bulldogs -- Dustin Braddick (9.0 ppg.), Charles Gilmore (9.0 ppg.) and Dakin Braddick (8.8 ppg.) are averaging more than eight points per contest. Dustin Braddick leads the team in rebounding (6.0 rpg.). SC State is averaging nearly 10 steals per game, but the Bulldogs are also committing 25 turnovers per outing.
More from WFU??s 73-49 win over SMU Sunday night
- Wake Forest turned in its highest three-point percentage of the season (.412), going 7-of-17 from behind the arc. - The Deacons?? 17 turnovers tied a season high. - WFU??s 25 field goals came on 20 assists. - The Wake Forest bench, which had been averaging a combined 11 points per game, produced 29 points, paced by Jamaal Levy??s 12 points. - Eric Williams?? six free throws and Justin Gray??s eight free throw attempts were the most by any Deacon this season. Williams was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. - SMU set season lows for Wake Forest opponents in several categories. The Mustangs?? 49 points were the fewest by a team in Lawrence Joel Coliseum since Campbell scored 47 points against the Deacons on Nov. 25, 2000. SMU??s 26 rebounds were the fewest by a WFU opponent since Richmond had 24 boards on Jan. 2, 2002. SMU??s 16 field goals were the fewest by a Wake Forest opponent in the Prosser era.
Deacons cleaning up when it comes to rebounding
Heading into the 2002-03 season, rebounding was a big concern for head coach Skip Prosser. Gone are two of WFU??s top rebounders -- Darius Songaila and Antwan Scott -- with freshmen and sophomores taking their place. But through four games, the Deacons are out-rebounding opponents by 14.0 boards per game. That??s the largest rebound margin in the ACC and one of the top figures in the nation. WFU??s rebound margin against SMU Dec. 15 (+22) was the second-highest in the Prosser era at Wake Forest. The Deacons have not been out-rebounded this season. Rebounding has been a group effort this season with sophomore Vytas Danelius (10.3 rpg.) and senior Josh Howard (8.8 rpg.) leading the way. Danelius ranks third in the ACC in rebounding and Howard ranks sixth. Freshman center Eric Williams (6.3 rpg.) ranks 12th in the ACC, third among freshmen. And 6-2 guard Taron Downey is chipping in 4.3 rebounds per game.
Wake Forest-SC State series history
- Wake Forest leads, 2-0. - The Deacons and Bulldogs will meet for the third consecutive December. - Wake Forest won last year??s meeting 115-75. The previous season, the Deacons topped the Bulldogs, 66-55. - WFU coach Skip Prosser is 1-0 all-time against SC State. - Bulldog coach Cy Alexander is 0-2 all-time versus Wake Forest. - Wake Forest is 8-0 all-time against teams from the MEAC and the Deacons will play two other MEAC teams in the coming weeks -- North Carolina A&T (Dec. 28) and Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 30).
WFU-SCSU game will feature well-known NBA names
Moses Malone and Dale Ellis combined to score more than 43,000 career points in the NBA. What does this have to do with Wednesday??s Wake Forest-SC State game? Sons of those former NBA greats will be going head-to-head. Moses Malone, Jr. is a senior guard with SC State and he leads the Bulldogs in scoring. Chris Ellis, the son of Dale, is an emerging freshman standout at Wake Forest.
Media shootout slated for halftime of Wednesday??s game
Members of the local media will participate in the third annual Media Shootout at halftime of Wednesday??s Wake Forest-SC State game. Among the commitments so far: defending champion Greg Kerr of WFMY-TV, Tolley Carr of WXII-TV, Rob Daniels of the Greensboro News & Record and radio personalities from 92 and 102 FM. WXII??s Dave Goren won the inaugural event back in December of 2001. Last year Kerr put on a remarkable three-point shooting display and he??s the favorite to capture the title again this year (please, no wagering).
More Deacon-Bulldog connections
- South Carolina State has two players on its roster -- Demeco Heath (Kinston) and Charles Gilmore (Fayetteville) -- from North Carolina. Heath attended the same high school (Kinston HS) as former Deacon Craig Dawson. - Bulldog head coach Cy Alexander graduated from Catawba (NC) in 1975.

Deacon football team to be recognized Wednesday night
The Seattle Bowl-bound Wake Forest football team will be recognized during Wednesday night??s Deacon-South Carolina State game at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. The Deacons begin preparations for the Dec. 30 Seattle Bowl and the Oregon Ducks this week.
Danelius relishing blue-collar role
Sophomore forward Vytas Danelius isn??t flashy and he rarely makes SportsCenter highlights on ESPN. But the 6-8 Lithuanian is a big reason that Wake Forest is currently 4-0. One of three players in the ACC averaging a double-double (11.3 ppg. and 10.3 rpg.), Danelius is the top rebounder on a team leading the ACC in rebound margin. More on Danelius: - Last season Danelius produced two double-doubles in 34 games. He??s already matched that total this season through just four games. - He is shooting 63.3 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the free throw line. Danelius ranks third in the ACC in rebounding.
WFU still not in national polls, but computers love the Deacons
Wake Forest has not been ranked in either the Associated Press or ESPN/USA Today polls all season, although the Deacons continue to receive more and more votes for the polls each week. The Deacons are vying to get back into the top 25 for the first time since Feb. 25, 2002. Meanwhile, the Deacons are the darlings of the computer polls. In Monday??s College RPI.com rankings, Wake Forest was No. 2 behind Indiana. In the Sagarin Ratings, the Deacons are ranked No. 7. Wake Forest also made its debut this week in The Sporting News power poll at No. 23. Four Wake Forest opponents -- No. 3 Duke, No. 14 Marquette, No. 23 North Carolina and No. 24 Maryland -- are ranked this week in the Associated Press poll.
Versatile Josh Howard vying to become WFU??s 11th All-American
Senior All-American candidate Josh Howard, who missed a large portion of preseason practice because of severe shin splints, is off to a sparkling start in 2002-03. He??s a legitimate candidate to become the 11th player in Wake Forest history to earn All-American honors and the first since Tim Duncan in 1997. Howard is a candidate for the John R. Wooden and Naismith awards, both of which go to the nation??s top player. Without question, Howard is one of the most versatile players in college basketball. The ACC posts 12 individual statistics. He ranks in the top 15 in 11 of them. Consider what Howard has achieved in 2002-03: - He was named ACC Player of the Week Dec. 9. - In WFU??s 90-80 win at 23rd-ranked Wisconsin, Howard carried the team with a career-high 31 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. - Howard has two double-doubles on the season. - At 6-6, he is one of the best offensive rebounders in the country. He ranks second in the ACC in offensive boards and sixth in overall rebounding. - He ranks third in the ACC in scoring (18.3 ppg.) despite his lowest output of the season (8 points) against SMU. - Defensively, he is often asked to defend the opponent??s top scorer. SMU??s Quinton Ross entered the Dec. 15 game averaging 27 points per game, but was held to 3-of-15 shooting by Howard. - His shooting skills have improved dramatically since his arrival at WFU four years ago. He ranks among the ACC leaders in field goal percentage (.472), free throw percentage (.929) and three-point field goal percentage (.500). - He has made at least two three-point field goals in every game this season. Through four games, he has 10 three-pointers. Last season he didn??t make his 10th three-point field goal until the 13th game of the season.
Howard??s 2002-03 Honors
- ACC Player of the Week (Dec. 9) - 1st team Preseason All-ACC - 1st team Preseason All-ACC (Athlon) - 1st team Preseason All-ACC (ACC Handbook) - Wooden Award candidate - Naismith Award candidate - CLASS Award candidate - Preseason Honorable mention All-America (Athlon) - Preseason ACC Top Defensive Player (Athlon)

Howard continues to reach several individual milestones
Senior Josh Howard, if he can remain healthy, will leave his name etched throughout the Wake Forest record books: - Howard played in his 100th career game on Sunday. - He started on Sunday for the 92nd time in his career. Howard is eight games started shy of becoming just the ninth player in WFU history to start 100 games. - Howard (1,232 points) moved into 25th place on the Wake Forest career scoring chart on Sunday, passing Paul Long. He is eight points away from passing Jackie Murdock for 24th place and 21 points away from passing Kenny Green for 23rd place. - Howard (614 rebounds) ranks 20th in WFU rebounding history. With five more rebounds he will pass Lefty Davis for 19th place. - With 99 career blocked shots, Howard needs just one to reach the century mark for his career. In the process, he will pass Chris King and take over seventh place on Wake??s all-time blocks list. - He is on pace to become just the 10th player in school history to make 100 career three-point field goals. He has 66 currently. - Howard (160 career steals) ranks sixth in school history. He needs 21 to pass Randolph Childress and move into the top five. - He is 10 assists shy of 200 career assists. - Howard (14 career double-doubles) stands alone at sixth place in Wake Forest history for career double-doubles.

Baby Deacs making a huge impact
Only time will tell, but the Wake Forest five-man freshman class has a chance to be one of the top overall groups in school history. The ??Baby Deacs?? passed a huge test Dec. 4 at 23rd-ranked Wisconsin. Playing with great poise, they weathered several Badger runs and made key plays down the stretch to preserve Wake??s first road win against a ranked team since 1999. Center Eric Williams, Wake??s first McDonald??s All-American since Loren Woods, is averaging 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. With a field goal percentage of 64.3, he is vying to become just the second freshman in school history to shoot 60 percent in his rookie season (Niki Arinze is the other). Guard Justin Gray (10.8 points per game) had a 20-point effort at Wisconsin. He scored four points in the final 1:11 to help seal the Deacon victory. Gray (17 assists, nine turnovers) ranks sixth in the ACC in assist-turnover ratio and ninth in assists. Forward Chris Ellis (4.5 ppg.) is developing into a dependable post player. He scored six points and grabbed four rebounds in Sunday??s win over SMU. Swingman Trent Strickland (5.3 ppg.) is emerging as Wake??s sixth man, playing 18 minutes per game. Richard Joyce (3.0 ppg.) has seen limited action, but he was 2-of-2 from three-point range Sunday against SMU.
Sophomore Taron Downey emerges as a vocal leader for the Deacons
With five seniors gone off of last year??s team and just one healthy senior on this year??s roster, sophomore guard Taron Downey has taken over the role as a vocal leader. That??s a big change for a player who rarely talked last season as a rookie. And Downey is letting his play do his talking as well. - With 17 assists and just six turnovers, Downey ranks third in the ACC in assist/turnover ratio. Dating back to last season, Downey has committed just six turnovers in his last 183 minutes of action. - He ranks ninth in the ACC in assists per game. - The 6-2 Downey actually ranks 10th in the ACC, tied with teammate Eric Williams, in defensive rebounds per game (4.25). - He ranks sixth in the ACC in free throw percentage (.857). - Downey ranks 13th in the ACC in three-point field goals (1.75). - He tied a career-high with 15 points at Wisconsin Dec. 4.
Rehabilitation over, Lepore and Schoetz make debuts
Senior guard Steve Lepore, who ruptured a patella tendon last March in the ACC Tournament, was finally cleared to play Dec. 15. Lepore played just one minute against SMU and missed his only field goal attempt, but was happy to just be on the court after nearly 10 months of rehabilitating his knee. A former two-year starter at Northwestern, Lepore could provide a huge lift to the Deacons if he can fully recover from the injury. Lepore??s 10 months of sitting out pale in comparison to junior center Dshamal Schoetz. The seven-footer redshirted the 2000-01 season, then suffered a severe knee injury prior to the start of the 2001-02 season and sat out the entire year. Schoetz played in his first regular season game -- his first organized game since high school in 1999-00 -- Dec. 15 against SMU. He played two minutes, grabbed a rebound and recorded a steal. For the first time all season, all 15 Deacons are healthy, or at least capable of playing. Senior All-American candidate Josh Howard has been plagued throughout the preseason with severe shin splints. Despite playing with pain, he is seeing more than 30 minutes of action per game. Freshman center Eric Williams (bruised knee, sprained ankle) and freshman Justin Gray (neck strain) both recovered from preseason injuries.
Skip Prosser approaching 200th career victory
Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser is 10 wins shy of his 200th career victory. Prosser, in his 10th season as a head coach, has a career record of 190-91. Prosser??s career winning percentage (.676) ranks 20th among all active Division I coaches. Last season Prosser won more games than any first-year Deacon head coach since 1927. In two seasons at Wake Forest, Prosser has compiled a record of 25-13. The 19th coach in WFU history, he has already won more games than 10 of his Deacon predecessors. He has reached the 25-win mark at Wake Forest quicker than any coach at the school since Hank Garrity in 1924 and 1925.
Wake Forest leads the ACC in free throw percentage
It??s still very early, but Wake Forest??s free throw percentage (.756) is tops in the ACC. The Deacons have shot no lower than 68.2 percent (vs. Temple) and they made 17-of-19 (.895) in the win over No. 23 Wisconsin on Dec. 4. Like we said, it??s early, but Wake??s free throw percentage is its highest since 1970. The Deacons haven??t led the ACC in free throw percentage since 1995.
Wake Forest??s schedule now looks even more difficult
With Temple, Wisconsin, SMU and St. John??s among Wake Forest??s non-conference opponents, the 2002-03 Deacon schedule will be a challenging one. But now, that schedule looks even more daunting. In the ESPN/USA Today poll, five Wake Forest opponents -- Duke, Marquette, Maryland, North Carolina and NC State -- are ranked in the top 25. Wisconsin and Virginia are receiving votes for the poll. Georgia Tech, Florida State, Clemson and St. John??s are not receiving votes, but those four teams are a combined 19-3.

Youthful Deacons already experienced in close games
Wake Forest hasn??t been involved in a buzzer-beater yet this season, but three of four Demon Deacon games haven??t been decided until the final couple of minutes. Wake??s first three opponents -- Yale, Temple and Wisconsin -- all participated in postseason play last year. The Deacons defeated all three by a combined total of just 29 points. Compare that to two years ago (2000-01) when Wake beat its first three opponents by a combined 95 points.
On deck: undefeated St. John??s visits Joel Coliseum on Saturday
If Wake Forest can hold court on Wednesday and defeat South Carolina State, it will set up a battle of two undefeated teams Saturday when the Deacons host St. John??s (3:30/ESPN). Wake Forest and St. John??s are two of 19 remaining undefeated teams in Division I. The Deacons and Red Storm are two of eight undefeated teams not ranked in at least one of the two major polls. St. John??s, 5-0, is led by senior guard Marcus Hatten, who ranks 14th nationally in scoring (22.8 ppg.). The Red Storm beat the Deacons, 70-62, last season (Dec. 20) at Madison Square Garden.
Wake Forest win at Wisconsin clinches Challenge for the ACC
Wake Forest continued its success in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, beating 23rd-ranked Wisconsin, 90-80, Dec. 4 in Madison, WI. The win gave the ACC a 5-4 advantage and the Commissioner??s Cup for the fourth straight year. In this year??s nine-game event, Wake Forest was the only team to win on the road.
Deacons eye 13th consecutive postseason appearance
Wake Forest enters the 2002-03 season having appeared in postseason play 12 consecutive seasons. That??s the longest current streak among all teams in the ACC. Maryland, with nine straight postseason appearances, is second. The Deacons earned NCAA Tournament bids every year from 1991 to 1997, then played three straight years in the NIT. In 2000, WFU won the NIT title. Wake went back to the NCAAs in 2001 and 2002.
The ACC is tops
Since 1985, no conference has performed better in the postseason than the ACC. Since 1988, the ACC has made 17 Final Four appearances while the Big Ten is second with 12 Final Four teams. More on the ACC in the NCAA Tournament: - The ACC has produced the last two NCAA champions (Duke in 2001 and Maryland in 2002). - The ACC is the only league to have at least one team in the Final Four in each of the last six years. - Since 1985, the ACC leads all conferences in NCAA Tournament wins (182), Sweet 16 appearances (51), and Final Four appearances (18). - The ACC has had at least one consensus All-American in each of the past 12 years -- the longest active streak by any league. - An all-time high 154 televised games involving ACC teams are on tap for 2002-03.
Field hockey team wins national championship
Wake Forest defeated Penn State 2-0 Nov. 24 in Louisville to win the NCAA field hockey championship. The Deacons claimed Wake Forest??s first national title since the men??s golf team in 1986. It marked the first time a Wake Forest women??s athletic team has won a national championship. The performance of the field hockey team has highlighted what has been a remarkable fall for Wake Forest athletics. Wake Forest is ranked No. 2 in the first NACDA Director??s Cup standings of the 2002-03 academic year. The men??s soccer team was ranked No. 1 nationally and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The women??s cross country team won the ACC championship and finished ninth in the NCAA championships Monday. The football team is 6-6 and bowl-eligible for the second straight year. The Deacons will play in the Seattle Bowl Dec. 30. The women??s soccer team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, the Demon Deacon baseball and men??s golf teams are both ranked in the top 10 nationally in their respective preseason polls.

Always on Sunday (it seems)
Nine times this season Wake Forest will play on Sunday. In all but one of those games, the Deacons will be playing on Fox Sports Net TV. Conversely, Wake will play on Saturday just five times in 2002-03. The Deacons have Saturdays off between Jan. 5 and March 1.
