WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team defeated Western Carolina 71-56 early Wednesday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Tipping off at 11:30 a.m. for "Middle School Day" the Demon Deacons entertained a school record crowd of 4,786, mainly made up of area middle school children that were bussed in for the annual field trip to a Wake Forest game.

Eafton Hill led Wake Forest with an outstanding all-around game, scoring 17 points with 11 rebounds, six assists and three blocks. Tonia Brown added 16 points and Tiffani Listenbee had 11.

"I am truly pleased with how our starters played at the beginning of the game. It's been a while since we've had an aggressive start like we did today," said Wake Forest head coach Charlene Curtis. "We just did not play consistently for 40 minutes. We only played about 20 minutes of good basketball. The good thing about is when it was 51-to-53, we didn't quit. We stepped up our defense and we got some stops. I was proud of how mature we played and how we hung in there."

Yoneko Allen led Western Carolina with 18 points, while Kala Green chipped in 10. The Catamounts made a run halfway through the second half and cut the lead to two, at 53-51, but the Deacons pulled away on a 18-5 spurt to finish the game.

Defensively, the Deacons forced 19 turnovers, limited the Catamounts to 35 percent shooting and blocked eight shots.

Wake Forest extends its winning streak to six games, improving to 7-1 with the win. Western Carolina falls to 6-2 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action this weekend when they travel to Radford, Va., to take on Curtis' alma mater, Radford, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21.
