Michael Collins, a senior on the 2001 Wake Forest football team, will participate in the Hula Bowl All-Star Classic on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Hula Bowl kicks off at 8:00 p.m. (EST) in Maui and will be televised live on ESPN.
Collins, a 6-6, 302-pound offensive guard from Hickory, NC, will be wearing his familiar WFU jersey number 79 for the South team. A third-team All-America selection by The Sporting News, Collins was a first-team All-ACC pick this past season. Collins was a Blue-Gray All-Star Classic participant this year also.
Moved to the guard position in Wake Forest's new offensive system this past season, Collins was one of the strongest and most aggressive players on the team. Collins helped clear the way for the Demon Deacons to rush for 294 yards in the win at East Carolina, earning Sept. 1 ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors. He was instrumental in Wake Forest's 389 yards of total offense in the victory over Northern Illinois, earning ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors again for Nov. 24.
Collins will be blocking for the 2001 Walter Payton Award Winner, Brian Westbrook, a running back from Villanova, along with several other talented backs on the Hula Bowl South Team, including quarterback Major Applewhite from Texas.
The head coach of the South team is Bob Stoops from Oklahoma and he will be assisted by former Florida coach Steve Spurrier of the Washington Redskins. Dennis Erikson of Oregon State will serve as the head coach of the North squad and he will be assisted by Sonny Lubick from Colorado State.
