Women's Soccer Unveils 2002 Schedule

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's soccer team unveiled its 2002 fall schedule this week. The Demon Deacons, heading into their ninth year of competition, will open the season at the Florida State Nike Invitational Aug. 30-Sept. 1 - in their first of three trips to Tallahassee, FL this season. Wake Forest will play 11 regular season matches at home in the friendly confines of Spry Stadium, beginning with Georgia on Sept. 6. Head coach Tony da Luz, who enters his sixth season at the helm, will have his work cut out for him, as the Deacs will play 11 squads in the regular season that participated in the NCAA Tournament last year.
Back in its fifth year, is the Wake Forest Nike Tournament, which will feature Wake Forest and Vanderbilt taking turns playing Southern California and Loyola Marymount on Sept. 13 and 15. The Deacs will then head west to the Golden State to play at California on Oct. 4 and at Sacramento State on Oct. 6. Wake will close out its regular season with four home matches against perennial powers Colorado College (Oct. 20), Virginia (Oct. 26), North Carolina (Oct. 30) and Duke (Nov. 2). After that the Demon Deacons will head back to Tallahassee, FL for the ACC Championship, Nov. 7-8, 10.
Seventeen letterwinners, including eight starters, return from a Wake Forest club that finished 9-9-2 overall and 3-4-0 in the ACC a year ago. The Demon Deacons will be looking to extend their streak of six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances to seven this season. They will be led by senior forward Joline Charlton, senior goalkeeper Erin Regan and junior defender A.B. Robbins.
