WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Wednesday's Session: The Wake Forest football team beat up on itself a little bit Wednesday morning at Groves Stadium in its first scrimmage. The defense dominated the first half of the 70-plus play scrimmage. Senior fullback Ovie Mughelli had two long breakaway touchdown runs. Anthony Young, a junior who moved from quarterback to wide receiver this past spring, made some nice catches and freshman runningback Chris Barclay looked sharp. The Demon Deacons reconvened later that afternoon on the practice fields for more positional work. Partly cloudy skies and a nice breeze provided tolerable temperatures for most of the day, but when the sun snuck out from behind the clouds, the dog days of August were in full effect. Wake Forest is 15 days away from kickoff at Northern Illinois. Starting tomorrow, the offense will swap jersey colors with the defense, so the weather should improve on the defensive side of the ball, since they will be wearing white and the offense will turn it up as they don the black tops.
Quoting Head Coach Jim Grobe: "Well, we're struggling a little bit right now. We've got some guys banged up and I'm a little bit concerned because we need to be physical, but we're just a little bit beat up right now. Our runningbacks and our receiver positions have not shown a lot of toughness. We've got a lot of guys that are missing practice reps right now. So we've got some work to do. That's not unusual though. I would be a lot more concerned if we felt like we were ready. I wouldn't say that we're where I expect us to be, but we've really got to get much better at the runningback and wide receiver positions right now. Those are keys for us."
Upcoming Practice Schedule: Wake Forest will practice at the same times (9:15-11:15 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m.) tomorrow and Friday.
Fan Fest: The Wake Forest football team invites fans of all ages to Family Fun Fest at Groves Stadium on Saturday between 1:00-2:30 p.m. There will be no charge for admission.
