DALLAS, Texas - Wake Forest running back Tarence Williams has been named a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award, an annual honor presented to the nation??s top college running back.
Williams, a 5-10 senior from Wilmington, N.C., is one of 42 national candidates and three from the ACC, joining Florida State??s Greg Jones and Maryland??s Bruce Perry.
??The preseason candidates for the 2002 Doak Walker Award are not only being recognized for their excellence on the field, but also for their achievements in the classroom and in the community,?? said Randall Goss, chair of the SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors. ??We look forward to watching the progress of each of these outstanding student-athletes this fall.??
The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select eight semifinalists on Nov. 19, and the National Selection Committee will vote on the winner in late November. The recipient will be announced on Dec. 12, 2002. BYU running back Luke Staley was the 2001 Doak Walker Award winner.
Williams rushed for 1,018 yards last season, a figure that ranked second in the ACC and 26th nationally. He also tallied an league-high seven 100-yard games, scored 10 touchdowns and was a second-team All-ACC selection in 2001. Due to a broken bone in his foot sustained this summer, Williams is doubtful for early-season action, but could possibly return by mid-September.
