Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest women??s soccer team was victorious in their first showing at Spry Stadium, defeating Coastal Carolina 5-1 in an exhibition match.
The Deacs got off to a slow start, with Alena Thom scoring on a penalty shot for the only Wake goal of the first half. The Chanticleers answered by taking their only shot for the entire game, resulting in a goal from Roberta Parsons, leaving the halftime score tied at 1-1.
Four goals were scored by the Deacs during the second half, with Joline Charlton chipping in two and Katherine Winstead and Alena Thom contributing one each. Charlton??s second goal was assisted by A.B. Robbins and Winstead received help from Melanie Schneider.
Wake Forest took 18 shots in the second half, adding to their game total of 31. Alena Thom led the squad with seven shots while freshman Sarah Kozey had five.
??I think we were just nervous in the first half,?? stated head coach Tony da Luz. ??I made a few changes upfront during the second half and put Joline upfront and that obviously helped with her scoring two goals. I don??t know if we??re going to keep her upfront, but we??ll see what happens in Tallahassee next weekend.??
The Deacs return to action this coming weekend, taking on Oregon and Oregon State in the Florida State Nike Invitational in Tallahassee.
