Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The 21st-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team trailed for more than 71 minutes in the season opener but rallied late to get a 1-1 tie with 11th-ranked Saint Louis at the UNC Classic on a Friday night in Chapel Hill.
After yielding a goal to Saint Louis' Nick Walls in the ninth minute, Wake Forest put the clamps on the Billikens while going to work on the offensive end. Finally, in the 81st minute, freshman Justin Moose took a pass in the penalty area from senior Bobby Gehring. The freshman from Statesville, making his collegiate debut, netted the game-tying goal.
The teams played almost 40 additional scoreless minutes, including 30 minutes of overtime, before settling for the tie.
The Deacons, playing without All-America forward Jeremiah White, outshot Saint Louis 13-10. Wake Forest was dangerous with its opportunities, forcing Billiken goalkeeper Martin Hutton to make seven saves.
The game was a physical one as Saint Louis was whistled for 31 fouls to Wake Forest's 21. In all, five yellow cards were issued, though just one to the Deacons.
The Deacon defense limited Saint Louis to just four shots on goal in the game and junior goalkeeper William Hesmer made three saves.
With the tie, Wake Forest keeps an impressive streak alive. The Deacons have not been defeated in a season opener since 1987. The Deacons continue action in the UNC Classic on Sunday against Akron Zips, an NCAA Tournament team in 2001. The game is set for noon at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
