Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The 21st-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over the University of Akron on an otherwise dreary Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill on a soggy Fetzer Field at the UNC Classic.
With less than six minutes to go in regulation, freshman Justin Moose buried the game winner, his second goal in as many games. The play began when Brian Carroll stripped a Zip in the midfield to gain possession. He found Ryan Alexander who slipped a ball behind the Akron defense. Moose ran onto it and found himself on a breakaway. He tapped it past the keeper at the 84:14 mark.
"B.C. stepped up and made a good play and Ryan slid a nice through ball to me and I just put it away," Moose said. "My responsibility is to score and create goals. Hopefully I can continue to help the team by doing that."
Akron would pressure for the final six minutes but couldn't get anything past Deacon goalkeeper William Hesmer who finished the afternoon with three saves.
The Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute of the first half when a Carroll shot was stopped initally but Vicente Bastidas was there to corral the loose ball and earn his first goal of the season. Akron wasted little time in responding, scoring just 101 seconds later on a similar play.
Wake Forest controlled the play for much of the game and dominated the game on paper. The Deacons had a commanding 21-7 edge in shots and won the corner kick battle, 9-3.
Wake Forest played without All-America forward Jeremiah White and central defender Kelvin Jones due to injury. The Deacons will be idle until next Saturday, September 7 when they travel to Old Dominion University.
